Australia: Fleet, Smart Sparrow & Weploy secure funding

Apr 13, 2017

Space tech startup Fleet, edtech firm Smart Sparrow and on-demand recruiting platform Weploy have secured funding. Fleet closes A$5m Series A Australian space startup, Fleet , has secured an A$5 million ($3.7 million) Series A round led by Blackbird Ventures , with co-investment from Atlassian’s Mike Cannon-Brookes, Earth Space Robotics, and Horizon Partners in Silicon Valley. Proceeds from the round will fund the launch a constellation of nano-satellites – small satellites weighing between 1 to 10 kg – intended to connect IoT devices worldwide, which are forecast to reach 75 billion devices by 2025. Incepted in 2015, Fleet is creating their nano-satellite technology in collaboration with aerospace engineers and plans to launch the first tranche next year. Once launched, the satellites will create a global network that connected devices worldwide can access. Fleet’s CEO and co-founder, Flavia Tata Nardini, said, “There’s so much talk globally about the potential of connected devices, but little action being taken to make this chatter a reality. We’ve been designing a technology infrastructure that will underpin the new industrial revolution. It will connect all corners of the globe to create a digital nervous system of devices.” Smart Sparrow secures $4m Educational technology company  Smart Sparrow  has secured a $4 million Series C in new funding to support the expansion of its instructional design and courseware platform. This brings aggregate equity funding to $16 million across three rounds. This funding round adds Moelis Australia Asset Management (MAAM), part of Moelis Australia and the NYSE-listed Moelis & Company (Moelis), as a significant investor in the deal structured by returning investor, OneVentures. Uniseed also participated as a returning investor. “Education technology is, for the first time, borrowing concepts familiar from consumer apps to simplify the process for faculty to create high-quality, engaging courses that draw upon the best of pedagogy and practice,” said Dror Ben-Naim, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Smart Sparrow. “Just like PowerPoint and Photoshop made it possible for anyone to create an engaging presentation or graphic, our platform enables the development of courses that taps the best of technology to engage students — without sacrificing pedagogy.” Weploy raises A$1m seed Melbourne-based on-demand recruitment platform Weploy has closed an A$1 million seed round. The platform connects pre-screened employees to employers requiring short-term staff to manage peak periods or cover employee absences, operating in the temporary staff services sector. Van Luong, founder of Viet-Uc Seafood Company, made the investment. He serves as an advisor to the company alongside Redbubble CTO Paul Coia, Rotten Tomatoes co-founder Patrick Lee and Australian financial expert, Robert Krigsman (Krigsman Partners). Co-founded by Nick La and Vince Luong, Weploy was conceptualised in response to the difficulties encountered dealing with recruitment agencies and the churn of unreliable staff encountered in previous businesses. Currently live in Melbourne, it is conducting a pilot project in Sydney. The founders plan to roll it out nationally before internationalising it. Also Read:
