CPE Capital prints investment in TVSN, Readers Digest owner

Share Private equity group CPE Capital has gone shopping at direct to consumer retailing business Direct Group, picking up a stake in a process run by Miles Advisory. Direct Group started selling jewellery to Australian and NZ customers in the 1980s, and now sells all sorts of goods to customers via online, print, television and digital channels. Louise Kennerley CPE Capital invested $40 million into Direct Digital Group Holdings, Director Group’s parent company, last month, and its dealmaker Adam Gordon has joined Direct Group’s board. Direct Group is based in Sydney and owns a stable of shopping outlets that target direct sales to consumers, including TVSN shopping channel, Reader’s Digest magazine, online pet store House of Pets and womenswear business Victoria Hill. Direct Group recorded $297 million in revenue from contracts with customers in the 2021 financial year, and a $14.6 million post-tax profit. Its sales are evenly split between house brands and third-party brands, according to the company’s website, and cover the home and garden, apparel, electronics, health and beauty and jewellery sectors. Advertisement CPE, formerly CHAMP Private Equity, has invested via its new fund CPEC 9, which started raising in 2020 and targeted $800 million for expansion and buyout investments. Other investments in CPEC 9 include bike retailer Pushys and Concrete Solutions, which is the second-biggest maker of concrete pipes and precast products in Australia. The capital injection opens the start of a new chapter for Direct Group, which started selling jewellery to member lists of credit card companies in Australia and New Zealand in 1981. The company expanded into homewares and mobile phones in the 1990s, before picking up shopping channels TVSN and Expo Channel and expanding into other categories in the 2000s.
