Bulls & Bears: Trio of teams enjoy streaks while baseball’s prospects are bleak

Dec 3, 2021

Article content The Suns have set a franchise record for most consecutive wins at 18 and that’s particularly noteworthy given they won all of 19 games as a league doormat just three seasons ago in 2018-19. Veteran point guard Chris Paul and a strong crop of young, rising stars like Devin Booker, Deandre Ayton and Mikal Bridges have made the 19-3 Suns contenders again this season after reaching the NBA Finals for only the second time in franchise history last summer. The Patriots are a thing given how surefire Hall of Fame head coach Bill Belichick has built a solid defence and a surprisingly effective offence around pivot Mac Jones, arguably the best of the rookie quarterbacks in the NFL this season. The 8-4 Patriots go into a critical divisional matchup against the 7-4 Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football having won six straight games. It’s not a stretch to suggest that the winner of Monday’s showdown between the Patriots and the Bills will win the AFC East and gain a favourable seeding and home-field advantage going into the post-season in January. Advertisement Article content And in Toronto, the 17-6-1 Leafs have won five straight, nine of their last 10 and 15 of their past 17 games to work themselves into a tie with the Florida Panthers for best record in the NHL (each with 35 points). The Leafs are joined by two other Canadian-based teams — the 14-4-5 Calgary Flames and 16-5-0 Edmonton Oilers — among the top six records in the NHL. The proof in the pudding will come in the playoffs when Toronto tries to translate regular season success into an elusive deep run in the Stanley Cup playoffs, where the Leafs haven’t won a round since 2004. Bears of the week Whether they’re initiated by the owners (lockouts) or the players (strikes), work stoppages in North American professional team sport always carry a high risk. Yet in the case of Major League Baseball, its lockout called at midnight eastern time Wednesday appears more problematic than usual given its timing. Advertisement Article content It is now in effect just over one year after MLB trimmed 102 games off of each team’s normal 162-game schedule after a contentious return to play negotiation in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. That foreshadowed the disconnect between the owners and the players that saw collective bargaining talks called off after just seven minutes on Wednesday. It’s an unprecedented situation for a league to risk losing more games to a lockout less than two years after a pandemic-shortened season with no fans in the stands. If MLB was pushing hard for some form of salary cap during regular non-pandemic times, one may understand the high stakes play of a lockout designed to get that significant long-term return. That doesn’t appear to be the case. MLB seems to believe that a lockout is needed to deliver an expanded playoff structure and a pitch clock to deal with pace of play; issues that you’d have to think could be resolved by inspired negotiation.
