Defenseman Jack Johnson, 950-game NHL veteran, relishes opportunity for another shot at Cup: “You only have so many chances”

Sep 28, 2021

Matt Slocum, The Associated Press New York Rangers’ Jack Johnson plays during an NHL hockey game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2021, in Philadelphia. PUBLISHED: | UPDATED: Veteran defenseman Jack Johnson, a family man, is in a precarious position with the Avalanche. The No. 3 overall selection from the 2005 draft is on a professional tryout contract (PTO), looking to extend his 14-year NHL career and get one more shot at the Stanley Cup. If he plays well in Tuesday’s preseason opener at the Vegas Golden Knights, he could stick around Denver for quite some time. If he doesn’t, Johnson’s wife and three young children are waiting for him back at his Columbus home. “When I said bye to my wife and kids, it’s one of those things where you might see them in a week or you might see they whenever they can come out and visit,” Johnson, 34, said after Tuesday’s morning skate at Family Sports Center. “So it’s a little bit different, but my mindset hasn’t changed too much. I’m just going to play. I’m pretty relaxed. I’m in a good place. If I have a chance to help this team win a Stanley Cup I’ll be absolutely thrilled about it.” Johnson and forward Darren Helm, also 34, will be the oldest Avalanche players in Tuesday’s lineup, which is mostly composed of prospects and American Hockey League regulars. It includes forward Artem Anisimov, 33, who also is on a PTO, and goalie Jonas Johansson, who is No. 3 on the depth chart. Johnson, who has logged 950 games with the Kings, Blue Jackets, Penguins and Rangers, has trust that the Avalanche will give him a fair shot at making the team. During his seven seasons with the Blue Jackets, Johnson built relationships with Avalanche assistant general manager Chris MacFarland and coach Jared Bednar. MacFarland was in Columbus’ front office and Bednar was on its AHL coaching staff. “They made me feel really good about it,” Johnson said of the PTO opportunity that includes being paired with rookie Bo Byram. “And also, I’m at a point in my career where, winning — it’s always the most important thing — but you only have so many chances, and this team, I believe, has as good of a chance as anyone.” Johnson, born in Indianapolis, is also good friends with Avs veteran defenseman Erik Johnson (no relation). They met at age 16 at the U.S. National Development Program and often shared the USA national stage in their 20s. If Jack Johnson, a left-handed shot, makes the team, he might partner with Erik Johnson, a righty. Related Articles “We’ve played together pretty much at every major international event — under-18, World Juniors, Olympics, World Cup — so I’ve had a long relationship with him,” Jack said of Erik. Sin City. Forwards Valeri Nichushkin and Logan O’Connor are the only members of the team in Tuesday’s lineup that played in the Avs’ season-sending loss at T-Mobile Arena last June. The Golden Knights, who went 3-0 at home against the Avs in that second-round series, are heavily favored Tuesday based on lineup comparisons. Vegas’ probable lineup includes some of its best forwards (Jonathan Marchessault, William Karlsson, Reilly Smith) and defensemen (Alex Pietrangelo, Alec Martinez). Footnotes. The Avs not playing in Vegas held a two-sheet practice Tuesday after the morning skate. J.T. Compher, who was the third-line right wing in training camp, stepped in on the second line to replace Nichushkin. … Bednar ran the morning skate and practice and will coach in Tuesday’s game. … The club had a scheduled 3 p.m. flight departure and will bus directly to T-Mobile Arena. The Avs will fly home after the game.
