High honour for Port Macquarie Lions Club members

Oct 2, 2021

High honour: Gerald Billing, Ray Chesher and Bruce Thompson have been recognised for their dedication to the Port Macquarie Lions Club. Photo: Supplied Three members of the Port Macquarie Lions Club have been awarded a high honour for their dedication to the organisation. Ray Chesher, Bruce Thompson and Gerald Billing received the Professor Frank Billson Platinum Honour Award. It is the highest Savesight and Health Care Lions honour that can be bestowed upon a Lion. The award recognises tireless commitment to raising funds to assist with research and medical intervention to those in need. It is presented to a small number of Lions each year whose long-term commitment has been exemplary. Ray Chesher was a member of Laurieton Lions before joining Port Macquarie Lions where he has held many roles including president, Youth of the Year coordinator and up until recently he has been the Savesight Car Raffle coordinator. As a Lion, Ray shares his sense of fun and wit with all. He has always given freely and generously his time, energy and knowledge to support those in need. While the award goes to Ray it also recognises the effort of his wife Joan who has been selling tickets and endlessly supporting Lions activities over the years. Bruce Thompson has been a Lion for over 40 years and has been a member of clubs right across NSW including Tamworth, Cobar, Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, and Port Macquarie. Bruce has held nearly every role possible within a Lions Club with a particular focus on leading and supporting programs for young people. While a member of Port Macquarie Lions he has been the Lions Christmas cake chair for at least five years and the club's tail twister. In this last role he has demonstrated a dry and sharp wit and a keenness for wearing very bright socks. Gerald Billing transferred to the Port Macquarie Lions Club from the Young Lions Club in 1991. Whilst a member of the Port Macquarie Lions Club he has been president, secretary and treasurer on multiple occasions. He has often held more than one role at a time. At present he coordinates Lions Christmas cakes and the House Bound Reader program. Gerald is a quiet achiever who makes things happen smoothly and efficiently. We also recognise the support and work done by Gerald's wife Valerie who also takes part in Lions activities and programs. All three members were presented with their awards on Wednesday, September 22. Our journalists work hard to provide local, up-to-date news to the community.
