Patti Payne’s Cool Pads: Famed architect’s $5.9M Mercer Island waterfront manse listed

Mar 12, 2016

18 photos $5.88 million waterfront manse on Mercer Island is drawing lots of interest. It is… more A head turner of a Mercer Island home – which is listed for $5.88 million – was the creation of the late Ralph Anderson , one of Seattle’s most prolific and famous architects, and his builder son Ross Anderson. Together, the two of them designed and built this 4,540 square foot waterfront home located at 4014 East Mercer Way. It turned out to be the preservationist’s second to last home. They completed it in 2001. Windermere Premiere Broker Larry Williams has the listing and loves talking about this quintessential Anderson home. 18 photos $5.88 million waterfront manse on Mercer Island is drawing lots of interest. It is… more “Ralph and Ross bought this lot together in 1999. It was a killer lot and they decided to build a spec home. Basically the view is bay window on steroids,” he says. “Money was flowing in the year 2000, and they just kind of went nuts with the materials. Cement stucco on the outside; clear fir millwork throughout; Rabbet joinery - even in the marble; radiant heating- the systems are the best you can put in a home” Just before they were going to put it on the market, a techie named Brian Cartmell came along and wanted the house. Williams said Cartmell was a “detail dude, and took the specs to the next level.” Cartmell wanted a copper fence and a copper roof. “That was $800,000 for the fence alone,” says Williams. The result is a most detailed, finely crafted home, with 80 feet of private waterfront, a yacht lift that will haul 18,000 pounds, gorgeous gardens and walkways, a wade-in-the-water sandy beach and a granite bulkhead. “We don’t see this level of finish very often,” says Williams. “It’s is super high-end. I’ve only seen a smattering of houses, maybe four or five in 10 years, where people go to this extent with the craftsmanship. The copper roof, with its patina is gorgeous against the stucco siding. There are some spare copper tiles in the garage that look like a shiny new penny. The roof has that old penny look that comes with time.” The current owners, Roman and Anna Tkachenko lived in the house for ten years. “Both our kids were born after we bought the house,” Roman Tkachenko tells me, from their new home in southern California. “Our oldest is almost 10 and our youngest is 6. The kids loved it. They had a huge playroom down in the lower level.” Tkachenko sold his Seattle-based company, Asian-Pacific Trading, and they moved because “my wife always liked southern California.” He thinks fondly about their decade in the Mercer Island house. “It’s a beautiful house with a wonderful location. We enjoyed everything about it. It is really unique,” he says. “Very open lines, classic and contemporary at the same time, and big, big windows. I miss being on the waterfront, on the lake, with no neighbors in front of us. There was always something changing, always movement on the lake.” Evidently, potential buyer interest is high in this property. “I’ve had over 50 agents and 20 interested buyers in one week,” says Williams. “It’s been a crush.” Patti Payne is a columnist for the Puget Sound Business Journal.
