Coronavirus: Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals how Australians spend JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments

Aug 24, 2020

Sarah IsonPerthNow Most Australians have been using COVID-19 stimulus payments to pay bills and add to savings, new figures show. The Australian Bureau of Statistics revealed more people chose to pay down bills using the payments in June than in May — up from 27 to 32 per cent — while a quarter of JobKeeper and JobSeeker recipients used the cash to add to their saving accounts. While fewer Australians felt concerned or very concerned about their personal health, the data showed more than half were still worried — a figure which increased for the unemployed by 10 per cent. Deloitte Australia Partner Chris Richardson said it was “not surprising” people had saved a chunk of the payment. “It’s interesting though that by June, spending rather than saving had increased,” he said. “Spending benefits the economy, so this data is good news.” The data joins a jump in retail spend in July, with a leap in turnover by 12 per cent compared to 2019. “The original fear was that the virus would scare the hell out of people and stop spending,” Mr Richardson said. “But in practice it’s turning out better than expected.” However, the lack of that fear meant some Australians were beginning to take fewer precautions to slow the COVID-19 spread, with people born overseas revealed to take more actions to slow transmission. While the wearing of face-masks overall decreased by 2 percentage points in June to sit at just 25 per cent, 40 per cent of people born overseas said they had worn a mask during the past four weeks.
