Aug 30, 2023
Advanced Technology Development Center March 8,1999 Six companies affiliated with Georgia Tech's Advanced Technology Development Center (ATDC), have been invited to tell their stories to potential investors at the Red Herring Venture Market South 99 conference in Atlanta. First brought to Atlanta in 1997 by Red Herring, the California-based investor magazine, the conference connects venture capital firms from around the world to the growing high-tech industry in the Southeast. Last year five ATDC companies made presentations, and three were included in the 1997 conference. More than 120 venture capitalists and other financiers attended last year's two-day event, hoping to find the next Mindspring Enterprises (an ATDC graduate). Atlanta has become a major center for such new investment, as demonstrated by the roster of presenting companies at this year's conference. On March 16 and 17 at the Ritz-Carlton in downtown Atlanta, six ATDC companies will be among 17 Atlanta-area firms to make presentations at the conference. Georgia firms account for more than one-third of the 44 presenting companies. The six ATDC companies are: Digital Furnace Corp. Co-founded by two Georgia Tech researchers and a veteran telecommunications executive in 1998, Digital Furnace creates cable modem software to enhance consumer and small-business network connections. Eba Systems. Recently accepted into ATDC, Eba Systems develops Internet-based computer systems and software to connect mobile computer users to their corporate base and one another. iKP (Innovative Knowledge Products Inc.) makes a software system called KnowDev, which allows on-line training of employees at their work stations. Notus Communications Inc. develops software to allow Internet-based, all-in-one communications systems, combining fax handling, voice mail, e-mail and paging. Photonic Sensor Systems, a 1998 ATDC graduate, has developed a novel integrated optic chip for biomedical and chemical sensing applications. Verifiber Technologies develops technology that allows extremely high-speed switching and modulation of optical signals, used in fiber-optic transmission systems. In several cases, the companies are looking for follow-on financing. ATDC companies attracted more than $22 million in equity investment between December 1997 and December 1998, and another six were purchased for a total of some $66 million. Located on the campus of Georgia Tech, in the city of Warner Robins, and in Atlanta's Georgia Center for Advanced Telecommunications Technology (GCATT), ATDC helps startup companies bring ideas to market in computing, communications, and new media. Companies participating in ATDC, past and present, employ more than 2,000 people and generate over a quarter billion dollars in annual sales. More information on the conference is available on the Red Herring website at www.redherring.com/events/vms99 . The media contact for the conference is Cheryl Murphy with Alexander Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, cmurphy@alexanderogilvy.com . The ATDC is part of Georgia Tech's Economic Development Institute (EDI). ATDC NEWS & PUBLICATIONS Atlanta, Georgia 30318 USA
