Charlotte, N.C. â An Irish pharmaceutical company will lay off close to 300 employees by Dec. 31 with the closing of its Charlotte operations, according to a filing with the North Carolina Department of Commerce. Qualitest Pharmaceuticals, a subsidiary of Dublin-based Endo International, filed a WARN Act notice on Nov. 2, listing the 282 jobs that will be permanently terminated. All affected employees have been notified of their permanent separation, and all separations are expected to be accomplished by Jan. 14, 2017.

Qualitest Pharmaceuticals is an Alabama-based company that makes birth control pills. In 2011, the company recalled eight of their oral contraceptive lines because they’d placed the pills in the packaging incorrectly. Now, women who became pregnant while taking the pills are suing for millions, demanding to be paid for both child-rearing costs and college expenses. CNN reports that the pharmaceutical company (a subsidiary of Endo Pharmaceuticals) recalled 3.2 million packs of birth control pills and told consumers that, while the packages were defective, they didn’t pose “immediate health risks.” At the time of the recall, women were asked to stop using the birth control, switch to barrier methods of protection, and speak to their doctors about the error. The company claims to have only found one blister pack that was printed incorrectly, but over 100 women are suing the drug manufacturer for putting out a dangerous product. In addition, Medical Daily reports that the pills that were released had their “lot number and expiration dates hidden,” making it even harder for women across the United States to discover whether they’d been affected. According to a report by CBS, many of the women affected had to change their lives considerably, even though they had taken the precautions to prevent pregnancy. Endo Pharmaceuticals has not responded to requests for comment due to their policy not to discuss ongoing litigation. The most their spokeswoman would say is that the recall was the fault of an external packager and that patient health and safety are the company’s top priority. Women Sue Birth Control Manufacturer For Cost of Raising Children Due to Defective Product

In 2011, Qualitest Pharmaceuticals recalled 1.4 million packages of birth control pills due to a packaging error that reversed the weekly tablet order. Instead of appearing at the bottom of the package, the placebo pills, which are meant to be taken the week of menstruation, were flipped 180 degrees. To be effective, birth control pills must be taken in the proper order. Now, more than 100 women are suing Qualitest, claiming that the incorrect packaging resulted in unwanted pregnancies. The suit seeks millions in damages, including recovery for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and, in some cases, child-rearing expenses up to the age of 18. The lawsuit was filed this week in Pennsylvania, where Qualitest's parent company Endo Pharmaceuticals is headquartered, directly after a federal judge in Georgia denied class-action certification to a similar suit filed in the state. Vintage Pharmaceuticals and Patheon were also named in the suit. In a statement to ABC News , Endo Pharmaceuticals said that it had only been able to confirm one defected birth control pack that was sold to a patient. Endo's statement, in full:
Our commitment is to patient safety and we take product quality very seriously. ... There is no new or recent product recall. The recall that forms the basis of this suit was entirely voluntary and occurred more than four years ago in September 2011. The voluntary recall occurred based on an extremely small number of pill packs that were manufactured by an external contract manufacturer. Endo has been able to confirm only one blister pack that manifested a defect and was sold to a patient. Additionally, courts have dismissed cases arising out of the recall because the plaintiff could not establish that she purchased a defective package. The FDA's 2011 recall included the following oral contraceptives: Cyclafem 7/7/7, Cyclafem 1/35, Emoquette, Gildess FE 1.5/30, Gildess FE 1/20,  Orsythia, Previfem and Tri-Previfem.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Huntsville Police have made a second arrest in connection with the robbery at Qualitest Pharmaceuticals..
Police arrested Devonte Allison on Monday afternoon. He is charged with robbery. His arrest follows that of Qualitest employee Royale Barbee McGruder . Police arrested her Friday afternoon. She is also charged with robbery. Huntsville Police say the robbery at the Huntsville plant on Vintage Drive was an inside job. Investigators say several men entered a building when someone opened a door. They say the men took several boxes of medication. Investigators say more arrests are expected in this case.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Huntsville Police say they’ve arrested an employee for a robbery early Friday morning at Qualitest Pharmaceuticals. The incident happened around 4 a.m.

Through the investigation, police learned an employee was involved and she was arrested. Royale Barbee McGruder, 27, is charged with first-degree robbery. Qualitest Pharmaceuticals is on Vintage Drive near the intersection of Winchester Road and Moores Mill Road. Police say the investigation continues.
