Why Flexibility Will Fuel Growth In 2021 And Beyond

Sep 22, 2021

| Membership (fee-based) getty While the pandemic has taught business leaders a lot, one of the most important takeaways is that flexibility is critical to enabling success amid a rapidly changing business landscape. Not only is flexibility key when it comes to leadership style and effectively managing a remote team during these turbulent times, but it's also a central part of IT strategies that help to make a dispersed workforce function properly and keep customers satisfied. In order to design a long-term, flexible workforce that benefits both your employees and customers, you must first take a step back to identify the right technology to make it happen. Flexible subscription licensing offerings appeal to consumers. When it comes to consumption and purchasing preferences, things look very different today than they did ten years ago. In a recent report , Goldman Sachs called millennials the "renter generation" — meaning they're more reluctant to make long-term commitments and invest in things such as houses, cars and luxury goods, preferring to rent them instead. This preference for flexibility has ushered in the world of subscription models, both for individuals and within the business world. My company's recent hybrid cloud report found that 65% of IT leaders are willing to consider subscription licensing for their IT infrastructure, and IDC expects that 53% of all software revenue by 2022 will be generated from a subscription model. MORE FOR YOU Subscription offerings can boost growth and prolong customer relationships. Shifting to a subscription model has proven to be profitable for many companies, leading them to report more predictable quarterly revenues and reshape their customer relationships to be less transactional and more service-oriented. According to Zuora, revenue among subscription businesses grew roughly five times faster than both the retail sector and the S&P 500 from January 2012 through June 2019. Today, having a subscription-based offering is often necessary if you want to remain competitive. If your company doesn't offer a subscription model already, Zuora offers this guide , which is a great place to start. It recommends beginning by: 1. Assessing your current business model, 2. Taking a look at your customers and getting to know them better, and 3. Identifying your "way in" — i.e., know why it is better for your customers if you offer a subscription versus a one-off purchase model. Flexible hybrid multicloud offerings can securely power a remote team. In 2021, there's no longer a debate between private and public cloud; it's now widely understood that a hybrid multicloud environment is the ideal model to provide the consistency organizations need to take advantage of the full flexibility of multiple clouds whether private or public. With this model, customers can optimize costs and efficiently determine the right cloud environment for the right workload. Even before the pandemic, which resulted in IT teams having to adjust to accommodate widespread remote work, businesses across every industry were making the shift to hybrid multicloud. Through employing hybrid multicloud strategies, traditional financial services companies like large banks could shorten product-development cycles to keep pace with fintech companies. Retailers, for example, are also leaning on hybrid cloud to speed up the launch of new products and gain buyers through digital, direct-to-consumer routes and meet rapid delivery expectations. During the pandemic, hybrid multicloud has become even more central to business success. According to my company's recent report cited above, hybrid cloud positions companies more favorably to achieve flexible work options and strong business continuity plans. Seventy-six percent of respondents said Covid-19 caused IT to be viewed more strategically in their organizations, and 46% said they increased their hybrid investments as a result of the pandemic. With the shift to a dispersed workforce last year and a growing need to stay more customer-centric in 2021, hybrid multicloud benefits amplify in importance. Flexibility can't happen without putting security first. When implementing a flexible IT environment, an internal security strategy should be top of mind. It starts with putting the right team in place. Without the appropriate skill sets and staying up to date on cloud security trends like access management, logging and auditing, you risk talent gaps that can slow your innovation and deployment processes and can make the business vulnerable to security risks like data breaches and open pathways to data breaches and other security risks. Human error is the weakest link in cloud security. To combat common security risks in your organization, you need strong policies, especially as you scale or bring new individuals on your team. The pandemic also created a greater need for strong security frameworks as distributed workforces now connect with each other globally and across so many applications. The lack of preparedness among organizations for virtual work resulted in a staggering 36 billion records exposed in 2020. Although control over cloud innovation and flexibility is complex, the right frameworks and tools can help render cross-cloud management and security seamless. Consider  zero trust approach to security, one that aims to ensure enterprise security by assuming no device, user or application attempting to interact with your architecture can be considered to be secure. Zero trust is beneficial because it makes it so that no matter where data travels or who has it, it can be locked down and protected as needed. As we emerge on the other side of the pandemic, leaders must be intentional about implementing the right flexible infrastructure and technologies to power teams or risk declining team productivity and customer satisfaction. Not sure where to start? Constructing a financial evaluation is imperative for justifying adopting technology, including hybrid multicloud that can make or break customer and employee satisfaction. Aligning the entire team on becoming more open to advancing technology and modernizing for industry demand can impact overall business performance and success.
