Aquaculture Innovation Summit: Wittaya Aqua, Next Tuna among finalists to present

Sep 28, 2021

Aquaculture Innovation Summit: Wittaya Aqua, Next Tuna among finalists to present Credit: Kisaco Research Undercurrent News is reporting live on the Aquaculture Innovation Summit, held virtually on Sept. 28 and 29, from 12.15 pm CET. Day one will go over land-based aquaculture; investments in the space; digitalization; and presentations from the startups competing in the innovation showcase event, which you can read more on here . Day two will feature sustainable feeds, aquaculture diagnostics, and competition from the rise of the alternative protein sector. The focus across both days is on the farming of salmon, shrimp, tilapia, and seabass. Keep checking back for the latest updates:   The spread of land-based salmon farming poses an entirely new challenge to animal health firms, according to Nils Arne Gronlie, general manager of aquaculture vaccine specialist Pharmaq Analytic. “Recirculation facilities have living bacteria in their feed-through system which will differ from site to site, and intake water will differ,” Gronlie told listeners. “Therefore, each site will be unique and will need to be understood.” He explained that fish farms on land will require effective early warning systems and continuous monitoring of ecology at a level not previously required in traditional coastal farms due to the increased complexity of the operation. But the potential of closed systems for improving fish welfare — if the environment can be effectively controlled — is tangible, he said. One of the main advantages potentially conferred by fully-functional closed farms is the elimination of such external threats as sea lice, algal blooms, and escapees. Gronlie believes these benefits make the steady improvement of land-based operations worth the risk. “With land-based technology, the production process can in theory be controlled 100%,” he remarked. “No farms have that control today, but for every percent we achieve, the risk will be reduced, fish welfare will be improved, and sustainability will be strengthened.”
