Crowd follows direction towards WeWALK’s smart cane

Jul 27, 2022

UKHotViews Well, I still think that the WeWALK ‘smart cane’ for the visually impaired looks like a selfie-stick (see UKRI guides funding towards ‘smart cane’ start-up WeWALK ) but at least I can now tell you how much it costs: £539 (unless you want the longest one, which costs £549). I mentioned at the time that WeWALK had just launched a crowdfunding round – and didn’t they do well! Yet to close, the round has so far raised £1.76m against a £500k target at a £9m pre-money valuation for 16.4% of the equity. Headquartered in London, WeWALK was founded in 2017 by Turkish entrepreneurs Gökhan Meriçliler (CEO) and Kürşat Ceylan. The start-up is backed by Vestel Ventures, the corporate investment arm of Istanbul-based home and professional appliances manufacturing company, Vestel, which also manufactures the smart cane hardware. The cane uses a front-mounted ultrasonic sensor that detects obstacles and warns users with vibration feedback and can also be paired with WeWALK’s smartphone app to give users accessible voice-guided navigation. It's not cheap, but clearly backers think it has potential.
