WeLion has started production of solid-state cells for the 150kWh NIO ET7

Dec 5, 2022

December 4, 2022 In January 2021, she introduced the company NIO your luxury electric since ET7 and information appeared then that the car will also be available with a 150kWh battery, which should provide the car with a range of 1000km according to the NEDC standard. It is known for its inaccuracy, so we probably can’t expect something like that in practice, however, the car could probably reach somewhere around 850-900 km under good conditions. But the most interesting thing about the whole thing was the fact that this version was supposed to have solid-state cells, which most manufacturers expect only a few years from now. Today it is still something exceptional, and from the known use of batteries with solid electrolyte, we have perhaps only Mercedes-Benz in some versions of its eCitaro electric bus. Solid-state cells are those that have a solid electrolyte, which is supposed to increase the safety of such batteries. This is basically the only condition, so you can’t say that solid-state cells have such and such properties (a popular generalization is that they don’t like cold or fast charging, which is true for some, but not necessarily for all) because anodes and cathodes can be of completely different types and hence different properties, just as the electrolyte itself can affect them (even this is not the same for all solid-state cells). In the case of NIO, its cars will have cells from the company WeLion and unsurprisingly there has been a slight delay of a few months, so the ET7 with the 150kWh battery won’t be available this quarter as originally planned, but sometime in the first half of next year. But the first articles are already leaving the line in Huzhou in Zhejiang province. At the same time, they started building the factory here only a year ago, and now they are already churning out the first batteries. In terms of cell density, a highly above-average value of 360 Wh/kg was reported. Only the following months will show what the reality will be. Let us remind you that NIO cars are already available in Europe, namely in Norway, Germany, Holland, Denmark and Sweden. Against the original plans, that the cars will be sold only in Norway, while in other European countries only via subscription, but there has been a turnaround, and in other European countries they will be available for one-off purchase.
