WeCycle, an affiliate of I’m Eco, signed a business agreement with KEC System to expand biogas productivity

Jan 12, 2023

January 12, 2023 WeCycle Co., Ltd., an affiliate of eco-friendly brand i’m eco, announced on the 12th that it had signed a business agreement with KEC System Co., Ltd., a company specializing in new and renewable energy. At the agreement ceremony, the two companies agreed to share and cooperate with each other in technology for efficient treatment of biodegradable waste plastic and expansion of biogas productivity through pretreatment and combined anaerobic digestion of biodegradable plastic and organic waste resources. WeCycle, an eco-friendly company that develops sustainable recycling technologies from collection, sorting, and recycling of bioplastic waste, builds a new pretreatment system at the Icheon-si livestock manure and food wastewater energy facility operated by the KEC system, and includes biodegradable waste plastics. The plan is to create an environment for co-digestion facilities for various organic wastes. To this end, through industry-academia cooperation with Professor Hwang Seok-hwan’s team at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), anaerobic microorganisms with excellent biodegradable plastic decomposition capacity were secured. It focuses on developing technology to shorten the integrated anaerobic digestion process of biodegradable plastics and organic waste resources by using the microorganisms. Food waste volume-rate bags, a representative organic waste collection product, are also non-degradable and difficult to completely remove even through a separate separation process. It is planned to raise the quality level of fertilizer and compost. Biodegradable plastic is an eco-friendly resin that is used as a plant-based raw material such as corn or sugarcane. It is eco-friendly because its carbon emission is more than 50% lower than that of general PP and PE. suitable for use KEC System is developing biogas production through anaerobic digestion of high-concentration organic waste, combined heat and power generation, and natural gas production business. It is carrying out a number of national projects related to biogas production using food waste and livestock manure, and is constructing a number of domestic biogasification facilities based on its own method. An official from WeCycle said, “This business agreement is of great significance in that it can provide an environmentally friendly disposal method for biodegradable plastic waste, which has not yet been able to find a final disposal site.” We will secure a plan to combine and treat biodegradable plastic waste in a way that will enable the use of biodegradable plastic to be activated.”
