From a weekend of sunshine to sudden downpours: Winter not quite done yet

Aug 24, 2021

After a weekend of sunshine and warm weather on the South Coast, giving people a teaser of the spring months ahead, sudden downpours on Monday afternoon continued on with grey weather into Tuesday. Across the Bega Valley Shire, rainfall was recorded from around 2pm onwards and by 9am Tuesday, Weatherzone reported that across the shire 30-34mm of rain had fallen. The rain, winds and rising swell were a sudden, sharp contrast to the warm days the South Coast experienced on Saturday and Sunday, which reached an average maximum temperature of around 22 degrees. SES Sapphire Coast Commander Michelle De Friskbom said with the drop in expected rainfall for Tuesday compared to initial predictions, the risks locals may need to focus on were the wind and swell warnings for the Far South Coast. READ ALSO: Wind, swell the main issues in the low pressure system for Far South Coast A hazardous surf warning for the South Coast issued by the Bureau of Meteorology warned that from Monday to Wednesday strong southerly winds, heavy rain and rising swell could be expected. Rainfall predictions by Willy Weather predict that in Bega, Merimbula and Eden, there will be a 100 per cent chance of 10-20mm of rain on Tuesday and 95 per cent chance of 5-10mm of rain, except for Eden which is predicted to have 10-20mm of rain. The rest of the week will see it clear up, with Willy Weather predicting a 60 per cent chance of under 5mm of rain in the Bega Valley Shire from Thursday onwards. Meanwhile in Kybeyan, near Nimmitabel, Iain Saunders shared with ACM his view of the snowfall he woke up to Tuesday morning. /images/transform/v1/crop/frm/117044565/b5ee699d-b008-4b02-abe3-eb211aedd62f.jpg/r2_261_5098_3140_w1200_h678_fmax.jpg
