Alvarion supplies Wavion Wi-Fi solution to Telecel

Jan 25, 2012

25 Jan 2012 Burkina Faso Israeli wireless broadband solutions provider Alvarion has announced that it is supplying base stations for high speed Wi-Fi services provided by Telecel, a GSM operator in the West African country of Burkina Faso. Alvarion is providing the equipment via subsidiary Wavion, which was acquired by the company in November 2011. The network covers the capital Ouagadougou using Wavion’s two-way beamforming Wi-Fi base stations for blanket coverage in major metro areas including business districts, city centres, education campuses, hotels, the international airport and key residential areas. It enables connection to the internet via smartphones, tablets and netbooks at download speeds of up to 2Mbps. Customers are able to enjoy services such as video, image transfer, social networking and internet browsing. Network expansions to additional cities, including Bobo-Dioulasso and Koudougou, are currently in the planning stages for early 2012, allowing the service to reach over two million people. Commenting on the deal, Telecel’s CEO Dimitri Ouedraogo, said: ‘Following a thorough analysis of numerous solutions, we have selected the Wavion solution for this Wi-Fi deployment due to the unmatched coverage, capacity and quality of service provided by the base stations, along with a significant amount of global experience in designing and deploying large networks… Though the network covers challenging outdoor areas with heavy interference, it provides high quality and very stable service.’
