Nottingham’s Wattbike borrows to pedal further and faster

Dec 6, 2022

UKHotViews Maybe Peloton CEO Barry McCarthy ought to take some tips from Richard Baker, CEO of Nottingham-based exercise bike manufacturer Wattbike. Why? Because Wattbike makes a profit! I was set to meet Baker two or three years ago around the time pf Peloton’s IPO but it never happened (my bad) and in truth I failed miserably to stay in touch. Which means I also missed the news in September 2020 that Wattbike had received backing from brand building-focused private equity firm Piper to the tune of £11.5m. I’m assuming Piper took a majority stake but I can’t be sure. And it has just been announced that Wattbike has raised a further £3.25m via an asset-backed lending facility from Praetura Commercial Finance. Wattbike was cofounded in 2007 by former world champion rower Ian Wilson in collaboration with British Cycling. He handed over the leadership reins to Baker in 2018 and now carries the title President. Former Army officer Baker had joined Wattbike in 2012 as Sales Director. The other founders were software engineer Dusan Adamovic (Technical Director), former sporting equipment manufacturer MD, Milan Bacanovic, and former Cambridge University Boat Club head coach, John Wilson (business development director – don’t know if related to Ian). Wattbike models are every bit as expensive as Peloton’s – the top-of-the-range Pro-Trainer costs £2,499. However, unlike Peloton’s subscription platform, not only does Wattbike come with a free training app (Wattbike Hub) but it is also compatible with a raft of popular third-party indoor training and fitness apps. But the real difference between Wattbike and Peloton is the target market – cycling professionals, organisations and enthusiasts, vs ‘the great unfit’. Wattbike’s annual revenues of £32m last year (up 53% yoy) pale into insignificance compared to Peloton’s quarterly (but declining) revenues of $616m (see Peloton’s ‘turnaround’ ). But at least Baker – unlike McCarthy – knows how to make money.
