Waldo eyes up a positive business future by Startacus Admin Waldo is on a mission to make contact lenses more affordable than ever... If you are the kind of person who is totally okay with sticking things onto your eyeballs, you might be interested to hear that it’s now, (according to startup Waldo) less expensive and easier than ever to do so. Contact lenses offer advantages over glasses in that they won’t fall off your face and break as easily, probably won’t get left in the café or the car or in your other jacket, and they’re less likely to make those of us who don’t suit glasses look like nerdy, premature grandparents. However, they have their own set of problems from simply forgetting to put them in, to causing irritation, to being admitted to hospital with 27 of them stuck in your eye! But perhaps the most frustrating yet easy to encounter problem is simply running out of lenses. The obvious immediate solution is to wear yesterday’s lenses again, but this overwear can result in them drying out, becoming more hospitable to bacteria, and ultimately threatening the health of your eyes. So what is the simple solution to this simple problem? Not running out of lenses! Which until now was easier said than done. South African entrepreneur Ashleigh Hinde has seen this problem and now made the solution just as easily done. Looking at the way companies such as the Dollar Shave Club or men’s shaving supplier Cornerstone send out daily necessities (kind of) for an inexpensive repeat subscription, she decided it was the way to go for contact lenses too. By cutting out distributors and high mark-ups, Waldo is able to send customers high quality contact lenses for a low cost. At £12 a month for a box of 30 lenses, customers receive lenses with a power range of +4D to -12D, 58% water content, and UV protection of 70% against UVA and 95% against UVB radiation. The lenses have a super fine edge design for comfort, and the moisturising layers prevent the eyes from drying out and remove irritants. In short, we think that, with this price and this quality, customers will be glad they’ve found Waldo (mileage of pun may vary outside of the US).
