June 4, 2023 Vyou have a reproductive crisis in Denmark’. Professor Niels Erik Skakkebæk could say it so simply at the beginning of the year here in the newspaper, and we continuously read about declining sperm quality, pfas and fertility clinics that are stormed by women who fear for their future ability. The signs of crisis are clear in our otherwise fertile agricultural country, where the farmer plows and sows, the wife gives birth to children, and faith in the course of nature lies deep in the soil layer of the people’s soul. In modern fertility literature, the urban woman has probably stepped out of the peasant chain dance of fertilization, pregnancy, birth and all over again. Still, it’s as if Mother Earth is breathing down our necks when the ovaries don’t really move, or the petri dish shows paltry results as in Tine Høeg’s novel ‘Hunger’; Mia and Emil try, try, try, but Mia’s diary states soberly: “None of the eggs have been fertilized”, while complex thoughts about true femininity, guilt and grief fill other pages of the diary.
