November 30, 2022 Women with breast or ovarian cancer had fewer hot flashes, less psychiatric distress and better quality of life after using XRHealth’s virtual reality (VR)-artificial intelligence (AI)- based technology, researchers reported in the journal Healthcare. Forty-two women who suffered from hot flashes during anticancer treatment used the technology for 24 consecutive days. The women downloaded apps to their mobile phones, placed the phone inside VR goggles and then wore the combined device on their heads. The application, called Bubble — developed by an Israeli company of the same name — took the women into a virtual winter wonderland setting and went through cognitive behavioral therapy and mindfulness-based stress reduction exercises. Before and after the 24-day treatment, the women were filled out questionnaires to assess their hot flashes, general psychiatric distress, perceived stress, illness perception, sleep quality and quality of life, providing clinicians with data to measure patients’ progress. Overall, a large majority reported a decrease in hot flashes and psychological distress Seventy percent said the VR environment helped them get back to their normal routines faster, and more than 90 percent said they enjoyed the experience and liked using the technology at home. “[T]his pilot study provides highly encouraging preliminary evidence for the potential and promise of VR as a therapeutic intervention for hot flashes and accompanying psychological and physical difficulties,” said Joseph S. Feuerstein of Columbia University, the study’s corresponding author, and colleagues. XRHealth is a Massachusetts-based telemedicine company that integrates extended reality and advanced data analytics. Read the full study results here: https://www.bit.ly/3VzdGSE . — Sue Coons
