Chris Waller rates early favourites Criminal Code and Vitesse as his best chances at Randwick

Jul 30, 2021

Ray ThomasNews Corp Australia Sports Newsroom July 30, 2021 2:47PM Sydney’s premier trainer Chris Waller believes the bookmakers have got it right rating last start winners Criminal Code and Vitesse as the best of his stable’s starters at Royal Randwick on Saturday. Criminal Code is the overnight favourite at $4 for the Agency Real Estate Handicap (1800m) and Vitesse is the $5 equal favourite for the ATC Thank You Trainers Handicap (1300m). The duo both won at the Randwick meeting two weeks ago on a very heavy track but Waller said there will be no issues for either racing on a Good 4 surface. “Criminal Code has trained on well and 1800m will suit him,” Waller said. “Vitesse is in very good form and I’m hoping she can get a start in her race.” Camera Icon Criminal Code looks ideally suited stepping up to 1800m at Randwick on Saturday. Waller also has the mare entered for the Mote And Chandon Handicap (1400m) where she is rated at $11. Waller, who has trained 338½ winners this season, needs one winner on Saturday to break his personal best of 339 wins set in 2018-19. The Hall of Fame trainer has a strong entry for the Randwick although he has scratched Betcha Flying (racing at The Valley), Zelify and Hulk. “We are well represented in the mares race with Zing, So Wicked, Savigne and Rules Don’t Apply (ATC Thanks Frontline Workers Handicap),” Waller said. “The stable also Seleque, Joviality and Selburose (ATC Thank You Stable Staff Handicap) and they should run well. “It’s an OK group and hopefully we can get a winner or two to cap our season.” Waller has trained 167 winners on Sydney racetracks this season and will claim his 11th trainers title by a record margin. But already the trainer is turning his attention on the new season with some of the stable’s most promising rising three-year-olds, Home Affairs, Shaquero and Head Of State having crucial barrier trials at Rosehill on Friday morning. Photo: Grant Guy Credit: The Daily Telegraph With Sydney’s top jockeys unable to ride at Rosehill due to the Covid-19 lockdown, Waller had to rely on his stable’s trackwork riders to put his team through their paces at the trials. “I have the utmost confidence in my track riders,” Waller said. “They ride the ‘Verry Elleegants and Winxs’ in all their main gallops – they are probably under more pressure than the jockeys, really. “I gave them all the instructions before the trials – stay safe and help their horse’s fitness levels improve.” Waller said the racing industry is adapting to the difficulties of the pandemic protocols which have effectively closed Rosehill, Canterbury and Warwick Farm as racing venues for the next four weeks. “The crackdown has been difficult for the last 18 months,” Waller said. “I remember winning a Group 1 race back in the spring and becoming quite emotional because of all the work that went into it but this has become part of our lives now. “There are new challenges most weeks, right now it seems there is a new challenge every day, but the horses are good, we have great staff and they have adapted well to all the protocols.
