Top 10 Best Upcoming New MMORPGs For 2021 And Beyond

Dec 24, 2020

Perfect World, Pearl Abyss, Visionary Realms, Sega Now that 2020 is finally coming to a close it’s time we look forward to the future. Fortunately, there is no shortage of avenues for escape if you’re looking for an outlet outside of this horrible mortal world. Narrowing this list down to just 10 different MMORPGs was extremely difficult — turns out this genre is looking more promising than ever these days, especially with current ongoing games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, The Elder Scrolls Online , and even Runescape trucking right along. MORE FOR YOU Like most MMOs, Ashes of Creation is another medieval fantasy-style game in an open world setting. However, it’s designed to be as dynamic a game world as possible. According to the developer, the players “actions” will dictate which cities rise and fall and quests will populate and unlock dynamically based on where players are most active and successful. This should, theoretically, lead to a very diverse and ever-changing environment. Ashes of Creation hopes to have something for every type of player from detailed quests, engaging end-game PvE dungeons and boss battles, exciting PvP combat zones, town sieges, and more. The economy is very player-driven with a traveling caravan system which makes transporting goods and resources just as important as collecting them. I haven’t played this yet in any of the test periods, but it should hit the ground running into alpha and beta in 2020. Full release is likely not until 2021 though. Blue Protocol is an open-world anime-style free-to-play MMORPG that looks to have extremely flashy and fast-paced combat. I first wrote about Blue Protocol a year and a half ago when the idea of a Western release seemed like a pipe dream. Now, just before the dawn of 2021, the landscape is quite different. After the success of Genshin Impact games like Blue Protocol seemed more poised than ever to make a big splash. Now, Bandai Namco have since clarified that it will definitely be hitting Japan first with other markets, such as EU and NA, to follow after that. There is no specific release date yet, but late 2021 seems possible. Crimson Desert , Pearl Abyss | PC, Xbox Series X|S, PS5 | Late 2021 I’ll admit I haven’t played a ton of Black Desert. Between the PC version, console versions, and mobile version of the game there is certainly plenty of Black Desert to go around, it’s just so intimidating because of its reputation for being a heavy grind-fest. That being said, Pearl Abyss’ next game, Crimson Desert, has my attention. While it’s still unclear just how much of an MMO this is going to be, as opposed to a non-MMO open world action RPG with online elements, remains to be seen but I’m excited either way. Visually it looks as good as you’d expect and it’s got some amazing action sequences with incredibly large fantasy creatures. It reminds me a bit of Dragon’s Dogma, which is a very good thing. Crowfall , ArtCraft | PC | 2021-2022 This is one of many Kickstarter-funded MMOs that, despite the odds, don’t seem to have died and faded into obscurity. In Crowfall players battle it out for control of a centralized throne of power. There are massive territories to control and a dynamic player-driven economy that’s always shifting in power. Crowfall has been cloistered away in development for quite some time, so we’re waiting until it’s more readily available for more people to try out and put it through its paces. The skill-based combat definitely seems like a major standout. This one gives me some heavy Final Fantasy meets Black Desert vibes and I don’t think that’s an accident. It’s got big ol’ baddies attacking cities, heavy fantasy elements, deeply gorgeous visuals, and air ships. That sounds like the perfect mash up. One of the big draws for Elyon is the focus on big-scale epic battles in terms of letting players not only control mechs and airships directly, but also in huge Realm vs Realm battles as well. It’s also promising a very flexible housing system, which is great. Lost Ark , Tripod Studio and SmileGate | PC | 2021 I’ll be honest: tracking down an English-friendly version of an official Lost Ark website was basically a no-go, so I’ve linked to our friends over at instead for that URL up there. More or less, this is a Diablo-like top-down action RPG with an MMO framework. Theses sorts of games used to be a lot more popular than they are now ( CABAL Online , anyone?) but they’ve sort of fallen out of favor recently. Now with the genre as a whole coming back lately, with Diablo Immortal, Torchlight III, and Diablo 4 all helping spearhead that, Lost Ark is poised to do well. It’s certainly pretty enough to succeed. Magic Legends , Cryptic Studios and Perfect World | PC, PlayStation, Xbox | 2021 Remember that trading card game with cool fantasy art work that the older kids used to play at lunch while you were stuck with Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh? Yeah, this is that same Magic, but now in an online RPG. Turns out, Magic as an IP is actually doing great these days. Magic Legends will use a lot of similar themes and ideas from the card-based game, such as colors that determine thematic abilities and powers, but mixing it with mostly top-down gameplay that’s once again reminiscent of Diablo. If you like open-world emergent gameplay that has a big focus on players controlling territories, getting into fights with other guilds, and warring over the game world then that’s exactly what this is all about. The verdict is still out on how appealing it will be over the long term, but it has a solid foundation with Dark Souls-style action combat. This one has been in development for quite some time and out of everything on this list it’s by far the most traditional. This is a callback to the classic early 2000s-era of MMOs with a heavy focus on team-based PvE content like dungeons and raids. One of the primary designers on Pantheon, Brad McQuaid, passed away during development in 2019 and he was widely considered as one of the forefathers of the modern MMO since he was originally the Lead Designer on the first EverQuest with Sony Online Entertainment (now Daybreak Games). Pantheon was his final project he worked on and for me personally, I can’t wait to see it finally come to life fully. But, it’s probably still quite far away.
