Microsoft Office is finally implementing this critical security upgrade in Excel, Word, and other applications

Feb 8, 2022

Posted On: Microsoft has announced a major security policy change, stating that users will soon be unable to utilise VBA macros in certain documents created using five of its most popular Office products. Users will no longer be able to execute VBA macros in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, or Visio for “untrusted” documents when the company ultimately pulls the plug. All files transferred from outside the business network appear to be regarded “untrusted,” implying that all files from the same domain should retain their macros. Macros are a very valuable liability For both corporations and hackers, macros are a major concern. They’re most commonly used to automate processes like importing or updating data from third-party sources. However, unscrupulous actors may readily exploit them to spread ransomware, malware, steal sensitive data, and perform other evil acts. Cybercriminals have been spreading infected Office documents with macros for years, preying on naive or weary workers. Crooks would distribute money receipts, warnings of missed payments, job offers, Covid-19, and vaccination information, among other documents, to get victims to execute macros and infect their endpoints. Microsoft has attempted to address the problem with a rudimentary solution: by default, macros in downloaded files are disabled, and the user must choose whether or not to activate them. Yet, because most users are unaware of the reasons for Microsoft’s choice to deactivate macros by default, they frequently wind up re-enabling them. After years of pleadings from various cybersecurity businesses and experts, Microsoft has finally bit the bullet and decided to eliminate macros entirely. Microsoft Office version 2203, which will be the public preview version, will be released in early April 2022.
