A new survey from GetInsured looks at Virginians' ongoing struggle with medical costs and debt
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and RICHMOND, Va. , Dec. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Public sector healthcare IT leader GetInsured today announced the purchase and retirement of over $1 million in medical debt burdening 2,043 Virginians. This debt acquisition marks GetInsured's seventh such medical debt purchase in partnership with the non-profit RIP Medical Debt , now totaling more than $10.6 million for 7,614 recipients nationwide. One of GetInsured's goals is for as many Americans as possible to have access to affordable high quality health care; working with RIP Medical Debt to alleviate financial barriers to health care access is a key component of GetInsured's mission. "GetInsured's medical debt purchase in Virginia is a continuation of our charitable efforts to mitigate the economic burden of medical debt on Americans and bring light to this pervasive issue. Nearly one in ten Americans have at least $250 of medical debt, and nearly one in seven Virginians have medical debt in collections. Many more are likely feeling the impact of rising inflation on their ability to pay for medical expenses," said Chini Krishnan, co-founder and CEO of GetInsured. "We are thrilled to once again partner with RIP Medical Debt, an organization that that has purchased billions in unpaid debt helping more than four million families." To better understand the impact that medical bills have on the public, GetInsured recently administered a survey of more than 500 Virginia residents in conjunction with the debt buy. The survey found that more than half of Virginians surveyed (50.4 percent) indicated having medical debt now or within the past five years. About 27.7 percent of those responding had more than $1,000 in medical debt and 9.3 percent had more than $5,000. Medical debt is not unique to Virginia. These findings are in line with previous surveys GetInsured has run in other states, such as Nevada and Pennsylvania. The findings are particularly important as inflationary pressures continue and many uninsured Virginians say they remain without coverage. Roughly 21.8 percent of those uninsured listed "too expensive" as the top reason they didn't have coverage, but a whopping 57 percent were not aware of government subsidies available to them to get more affordable coverage. With the state launching its own health insurance exchange in 2023, health insurance premiums are likely to decrease, helping residents get the coverage they need to keep medical costs down. In addition, the Commonwealth plans to run a robust education campaign on the benefits of Virginia's new state-run exchange. The survey also found that 57.1 percent of those with medical debt said it impacted their decisions on whether to get treatment as needed. What's more, 82.7 percent admitted that their medical debt has caused them to cut back on spending or affected their ability to pay for necessities. Roughly 30 percent said it affected their ability to pay for food and groceries and 19.9 percent of those with medical debt said it affected their ability to pay for their rent or mortgage. Those Virginians who will benefit from GetInsured's donation earn less than two times the federal poverty limit and have spent more than five percent of their gross income on medical bills. Also helped by the debt purchase were those who are insolvent due to medical debt, meaning they owe more for medical expenses than their total amount of assets. About GetInsured

Key technological advancements are driving efficiencies for state-based exchanges
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- In the lead up to open enrollment for plan year 2023, public sector healthcare IT leader GetInsured is working closely with state-based exchanges (SBEs) to address technological needs as they prepare for the end of the federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE), work to increase operational efficiency, and improve the overall experience for consumers seeking coverage. With seven state clients — California, Idaho, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington – GetInsured serves millions of consumers through its innovative Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) technology, while working closely with insurance carriers, enrollment professionals, and state and federal regulators. The GetInsured platform enables state clients to respond quickly and efficiently to federal rule changes, resulting in record-level enrollments  in all states where GetInsured operates exchanges in full or in part. This model was implemented in time for open enrollment which, in Idaho, begins October 15 – two weeks ahead of the federal open enrollment period. Your Health Idaho's eligibility system offers real-time eligibility determination and lowers eligibility processing time from days to mere seconds. A dashboard that provides 360-degree visibility into the customer data that is transferred between the exchange and Medicaid. Real-time visibility into the status of a data transfer decreases staff workload, allows immediate resolution, maintains program integrity, and reduces the time that consumers remain uninsured. This empowers state Medicaid agencies and SBEs to work more closely to resolve eligibility coordination issues quickly for beneficiaries, so they receive the right insurance coverage at the right time. This capability does not exist on the federal marketplace and will be critical to SBEs for assisting consumers when the public health emergency (PHE) ends. A broker mobile app launched in partnership with Your Health Idaho to support the broker community which, in 2021, was responsible for 75 percent of the state's health insurance enrollments. The app provides self-service features that allow brokers to manage their business from anywhere, anytime and help consumers through the enrollment lifecycle with more ease. A suite of reports designed to surface enrollment reporting issues that will cause discrepancies when IRS 1095 forms are generated and sent to consumers for the prior plan year. By having these reports available on-demand, exchange staff can view and correct enrollment discrepancies throughout the year, minimizing the need for error corrections at year end and improving tax filing compliance and accuracy for consumers. Custom outreach for specific target groups of customers. SBEs can now conduct campaigns to encourage consumer engagement for specific target groups through the GetInsured platform. Exchanges can use this functionality to communicate new federal or state policies to targeted groups of consumers. Because this functionality is tightly integrated with the platform's business intelligence capability, exchanges can also track the conversion rate of these targeted groups, rendering it particularly useful for handling the end of the PHE. MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., May 17, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Public sector healthcare IT leader GetInsured today announced the purchase and retirement of $2.7 million in medical debt burdening American families across seven states: Georgia, Idaho, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington and Nevada. A recent analysis from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that nearly 1-in-10 American adults were in some form of medical debt (owing more than $250 in health care costs). This debt acquisition marks GetInsured's sixth such purchase in partnership with the non-profit RIP Medical Debt , totaling more than $9.6 million for 5,571 patients. "Today's medical debt purchase is a continuation of our charitable efforts to highlight and relieve an economic burden carried by millions of families across the country. Americans are nearly $88 billion in medical debt, which could be exacerbated when the nation's Public Health Emergency inevitably ends and an estimated 15 million people lose the Medicaid coverage they've had the last two years," said Chini Krishnan, co-founder and CEO of GetInsured. "Other Americans are bracing for higher premiums that may cause them to forego health care coverage altogether. To better understand the public's level of health insurance knowledge, average medical debt, and their impact on future medical decisions, GetInsured recently administered a nationwide survey in conjunction with the medical debt buy. The survey found that despite record-level health insurance enrollment this year, many Americans still struggle with the cost of health insurance premiums and are also unaware of subsidies available that may lessen the financial burden. The findings are particularly important as it is critical that Americans are aware of their health care options given the inevitable end of the PHE and the expected increased premiums should the American Rescue Plan's subsidies expire. Among the survey's findings:   
Nearly half (46.2 percent) of respondents indicated having medical debt now or within the past five years:
24 percent noted they had more than $1,000 in medical debt
5.3 percent had more than $5,000 
Of those with medical debt, 57.5 percent said it impacts their decisions on whether or not to get treatment for medical care going forward. Only 6.5 percent of respondents were uninsured (down from 8.5 percent a year ago from a similar survey)
However, 41.6 percent of those uninsured listing "too expensive" as the top reason they didn't have coverage, but a whopping 62.1 percent were not aware of government subsidies available to them to get more affordable coverage. "Medical debt is a persistent problem that we must address sooner, not later. Millions of Americans gained affordable health insurance coverage over the past two years thanks to federal relief programs, but those programs will likely phase out in the coming months, opening up the possibility of more Americans taking on additional medical debt," said Heather Korbulic, Senior Policy and Strategy Lead at GetInsured. "We encourage state agencies to be forward-thinking and to put plans in place to unwind and process redeterminations to ensure that the medical debt issue in this country does not worsen. Congress should also consider extending subsidies so that more Americans can afford appropriate health coverage."
