A documentary film on SBF and the FTX saga is in the works

Nov 18, 2022

David Darg to direct the production of a documentary on FTX Amidst the many woes that have befallen FTX and the crypto world at large, documentary studio XTR has started production on a feature documentary about the company, and its infamous founder and CEO, Sam Bankman-Fried. The news of the production was made public via a publication by Variety. The untitled FTX film is already in production, and the firm behind documentaries like “They Call Me Magic,” “Meet Me in the Bathroom,” and the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning “76 Days” is responsible. The filming is now taking place In the Bahamas, where FTX and Bankman-Fried relocated in late 2021. Oscar will direct the project, and Emmy-nominated director David Darg, who also served as the producer of XTR’s “You Cannot Kill David Arquette” and “Lazarus.” Executive producers for XTR on the yet-to-be-titled movie include Bryn Mooser, Kathryn Everett, and Justin Lacob. According to the studio, the movie will offer “unprecedented access to key players at FTX and the cryptocurrency community.” “The implosion of FTX is the most sensational financial story since WallStreetBets disrupted the stock market during the pandemic, and it exposes major flaws within the cryptocurrency universe. With our exclusive access and our team already on the ground, we’re excited to dive deep into this breaking story, which has already ensnared celebrities like Tom Brady. It’s incredibly thrilling to embark on this investigative journey without knowing where the breadcrumbs will lead us.” Said Lacob, XTR’s head of development. The company filed for bankruptcy last week, and Bankman-Fried was fired as CEO. In subsequent events, some celebrities in Hollywood were also affected by the FTX crisis. On Tuesday, several famous people were named in a class action lawsuit for supporting FTX, including Larry David, Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, and Stephen Curry. Vice Media joins the movie industry in FTX documentary As XTR starts production in the Bahamas, Vice Media has also partnered with tech business’s publication, The Information, to produce a documentary on the blowup of crypto exchange FTX and the fall from grace of its founder Sam Bankman-Fried The doc titled SBF and the “End of Silicon Valley” will be delivered in Q2 2023 and will feature reporting from The Information‘s crypto and venture capital teams, and Vice’s Motherboard team. FTX’s inexperienced leadership, the role of VCs, and Bankman-Fried’s obsession with “effective altruism” will all be dissected in the doc. For Vice, the project is the latest in a lineup of documentary projects that tackle timely financial matters, including Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis, and The Big Squeeze, about the GameStop meme stock phenomenon. Vice is also out shopping a docu-series about the world of crypto called Cowboy Kings of Crypto, detailing other crypto frauds and failures.
