Vicci Smith purchased Spartacus VI, as he was formally known, from her friend who had rescued him from the side of the road when he was just a foal. The mum-of-three agreed to buy Alan for £1, without seeing him previously, but when she went to see her "perfect boy", only had a £5 note to hand over. Vicci, 38, had her reservations at first, describing him as "a mass of hair and fluff" as she remembers thinking "what have I done". But little did she know he would go on to become a dressage competitor by "accident". Harriet, 5, riding Alan (Image: Evening Gazette) Vicci, from a village near Whitby , said: "My friend was rehoming him because he hadn't grown big enough for her. "But I'm 5ft 4ins so he's taller than me and the children ride him as well. "He's a true family horse now." Vicci with her horse Alan (Image: Evening Gazette) Care assistant Vicci realised Alan's potential after entering him in unofficial dressage competitions. "I just started him in unofficial dressage and he turned out to be really good," she said. "He just kept qualifying by accident. "We never chased any competitions or anything we just went and had a nice time." The pair entered the Petplan Equine Area Festival, at Northallerton, where they took second place in the prelim silver category. This qualified them for the festival's final in which they took fourth place. Read More Vicci thought that her run was over for the competition as only the top three automatically qualify for the championships. But after being granted the wild card the pair will compete in the prestigious final at Hartpury in April, two years after she bought Alan. To reach national level Vicci says is a "dream come true". Vicci Smith with her children Finlay, Lily and Harriet (Image: Evening Gazette) Vicci's children Finlay, 10, Lily, 8, and Harriet, 5, all ride Alan who is kept near Whitby . "He's turned out perfect and he's just the best boy in the world. "It's a fairy tale and so wonderful. With him doing so well at dressage its just the icing on the cake. "We couldn't love him anymore he's just the perfect boy." TeessideGazette
