Archer Aviation Announces Leadership Transition; Appoints Adam Goldstein Sole CEO

The need for technical jobs, or those focused on programming, software development, and engineering, is growing . The demand for these roles was already rising, but the pandemic has accelerated the need for employees with technical skills. Remote work has presented companies with new challenges , including supporting e-commerce, developing collaboration tools, and improving cybersecurity infrastructure. And they're paying high salaries to workers who have the skills to solve these problems. For example, despite the past year's economic uncertainty, annual salaries for software engineers average $110,000 , according to an Indeed analysis. "Whatever we were supposed to experience in 2030, we're actually experiencing it in 2020 or 2021 across industries," said Vivek Ravisankar, the founder and CEO of the technical candidate assessment company HackerRank. Employers that want to recruit the best technical talent should be aware of the broader trends in recruiting : expansion of remote work, top talent's increasing interest in social impact, remote interviewing, and employers' increasing acceptance of candidates with nontraditional backgrounds. Here are some ways to navigate this evolving climate and hire the best tech talent in 2021. Recruit from new talent pools, domestic and international
Sourcing talent from new markets can help employers as they rapidly develop their technical capabilities. Before the pandemic, most organizations preferred that employees work in the office. For tech companies, this meant an overreliance on the talent available in traditional markets such as San Francisco and New York City. In 2020, cities like Miami and Austin, Texas , became hot destinations for remote workers, many of them in tech. A recent report from the technical-hiring platforms Vettery and Hired found that 34% of postings for software-engineering jobs in Denver were for remote roles. San Diego, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Austin rounded out the top five North American options. This expansion could also be a boon for improving representative diversity within the workforce. "Any time you can expand the area in which you can pull in your talent from, you're just naturally going to get a greater diversity of your candidates," Dave Walters, the chief technology officer at Vettery and Hired, told Insider. Recruiters can also expect to be better able to attract and hire talent from outside the US. The Trump administration built a reputation for working to curb immigration. During the pandemic, Trump shut down the H-1B "skilled-worker" visa program and attempted to increase the requirements for foreign nationals to earn the visa that had become popular in the tech industry. As a result, US tech companies began expanding their presence in Canada so they could continue bringing in top international talent. Under Biden, employers can expect a more open policy, though most of the new administration's actions so far have been focused in other areas. US engineers and developers can expect the return of international talent to the competition for top opportunities at leading companies. The skills that matter the most
Vettery's report also outlined which coding languages and engineering skills were in highest demand. Walters said there were not many surprises: Machine learning and data science remain hot, and cloud-development and virtual-reality chops are still highly valued. What did stand out was the increasing demand for experienced engineers and managers of engineers. "Companies are more and more realizing they really need to have a good supply of very senior engineers that can really be the mentor and help their more junior engineers grow," Walters said. While technical roles are often among the ones where "culture fit" and interpersonal skills tend to be lower on the list of priorities for evaluation during the hiring process, many believe this is changing in part because of the expansion of remote work. Ravisankar said there was a need for team members to be better at asynchronous communication, documentation of their processes, and working well with others. "I would argue that these soft skills become even more important in a remote world," Walters said. HackerRank has even made adjustments to its talent-evaluation software along these lines, such as interview scorecards that include communication ability and other soft skills. "This might be a small change, but it's actually stirring up good discussions during the debrief on that particular aspect," Ravisankar said. Competition is heating up
Demand was already outpacing supply for technical roles , and the pandemic has only increased the need. While some employers may be able to fill the gaps, thanks to the broader talent markets available to them, others will need to learn how to adapt to a more competitive environment. "We see that candidates are increasingly interested in new challenges," Walters said. "It becomes important for companies that are trying to attract that key talent to really show and demonstrate that they can give those opportunities to candidates." Unlike the rest of the job market, power lies quite heavily with the applicants, as they have no shortage of opportunities available to them. "They are really interviewing the company and feeling out what their culture is, what their attitude is towards their engineers, towards their team, and how supportive are they of their engineering culture, their engineering team," Walters said. He added that compensation, benefits, and working environment also played a role. While the competition is getting stronger, both Walters and Ravisankar said there would be an increase in the number of engineers and developers to meet the growing demand. Ravisankar added that a majority of engineers were self-taught. Coding boot camps, federal and corporate training programs, and self-directed online courses are helping fill the gap as well. Here's a look at the jobs that got pay raises and some of the skills that commanded higher salaries last year, according to a study by Hired and Vettery. After a year when many organizations may have frozen pay increases to preserve cash in the midst of a crisis, the dust is now clearing. While some salaries may have been frozen, the ones that went up provide insight into which skills and jobs are valued the most by organizations, particularly in an accelerated era of digital transformation. A new study from Hired (which was acquired by Vettery in November 2020) and Vettery provides a look at the jobs that got pay raises in 2020 and some of the skills that commanded higher salaries. Vettery and Hired compiled the study findings from their database of clients, candidates, and other proprietary data. Vettery/Hired provides an AI-enabled talent platform to help organizations vet the right candidates. The study found that back-end, full-stack, and front-end engineer candidates saw the highest demand, making up more than half of all interview requests for software engineers. Machine learning engineers were also in high demand, ranking within the top 10 highest paid roles in every major technology hub with salaries ranging between $115,000 and $171,000 per year. Although the pandemic led many organizations to put salary increases on hold in 2020, the Vettery/Hired report showed some salary increases for the year. For instance, average salaries for top engineering roles in the San Francisco Bay Area increased by 5%. Those top roles saw salary increases of 3% in New York, 7% in Toronto and 6% in London. "In general, we were encouraged to see the growth in salaries and the growth in demand," said Dave Walters , CTO of Vettery/Hired, in an interview with InformationWeek. "We also saw the demand increase for remote engineers. The pandemic really opened up a lot more companies to exploring that." Vettery data showed that 24% more employers were open to remote hiring. Candidates in smaller markets were more likely to get remote job offers compared with those in major tech hubs, according to the report. For candidates in smaller markets looking to boost their salaries, remote jobs may be the road to success. The Vettery/Hired report shows that candidates in smaller markets received a 2% to 5% higher salary for a remote job when compared to job offers in their local areas. Walters said that those candidates did receive lower salaries than if they had been on-site in a major hub, but working remotely for a major-hub company was a way to earn a premium over the typical salary in local smaller markets. However, candidates based in major markets received up to 5% less for remote roles compared to local ones. That difference indicates that tech hubs like San Francisco and others have started to outsource and seek more remote employees, according to the Vettery/Hired report. Remote work was a popular idea among software engineers even before the pandemic. In the previous year's survey, 53% of respondents said that they would rather work remotely all of the time than come into an office every day if they were forced to choose. This year, roughly the same percentage, 54%, said they are more productive when they are working remotely. When it comes to skills and experience for software engineers, those with 6 to 10 years of experience were in the highest demand, receiving 33% more interview requests than all other engineers with more (11+ years) or less (5 or fewer years) experience. Top coding skills in demand are Redux.js, Google Cloud, React.js, AWS, continuous integration, and Ruby/Ruby on Rails. The top languages in demand across the Vettery/Hired marketplace were Go, Scala, and Typescript. However, software engineers' favorite languages were Python, JavaScript, and Java, followed by Go, Ruby, and Scala. Most engineers, 72%, cite a language's ecosystem, defined as useful and well-maintained libraries and packages, as the top reason for loving a language. The next reason at 68% is resources available for learning and development. Just 42% loved a language because large companies use it and just 20% loved a language because it was the first programming language they learned. That's good because branching out from what you know to learn new skills can be the key to finding better jobs and higher salaries as the pace of innovation accelerates. Walters offered that advice to job seekers. "Continue to learn the technologies that are in demand," he said. "That will give you the most opportunity and the most growth in your salary." It's a good time to be a software engineer . Not only are they in very high demand, but average salaries are up in all major tech hubs, according to The 2021 State of Software Engineers report, just released by the job-search marketplace Hired. Hired is now under the umbrella of the HR solutions company Vettery. The report culled findings from Hired and Vettery's combined marketplaces of more than 10,000 companies and 245,000 job seekers. Key findings
Working in the tech world is all about upskilling—for an edge over the competition, to be better poised within their current companies, and to be prepared for the inevitable next step in upskilling. The highest in-demand skills for software engineers are Redux.js, Google Cloud, AWS and React.js. The most popular coding languages are Go and Scala. Kubernetes and Docker are among the 10 most requested skills by employers. Software engineers have the luxury—should they want it—to move to a major tech hub, because the average salary of those in engineering roles has risen: 5% in the San Francisco Bay area, 3% in New York, 7% in Toronto and 6% in London. Backend, full stack and frontend engineers saw the highest demand, landing, respectively, 58%, 57% and 30% of all interview requests. Machine-learning engineers rank within the top 10 highest paid roles in every major tech hub: Average salaries range from $115K per year and $171K per year. AWS has eight times the demand from employers than Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure skills. Python, JavaScript and Java are engineers' favorite coding languages, primarily because so much information and resources are available. Consider Denver: It is a young city: 75% to 80% of the population is under 44-years-old. It is an outdoor-oriented active city with a promising economy and it's iconic. Most software engineers in 2020 learned to program from their computer science degree (45%), or a relevant college degree (22%), some participated in a bootcamp program (10%) and 23% are self-taught. California startup Archer lands US$1 billion investment from Stellantis and United Airlines to produce high-tech air taxis

Or are they just thinking ahead, out of the box — choose whatever cliche you like. United Airlines just announced it is investing in Palo Alto, Calif., eVTOL startup Archer Aviation and has placed a US$1 billion order for 200 of these electric taxis. Yes, we all know, this technology has been overhyped. Let’s face it, ultra-modern eVTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft look great in glossy magazines, but will they ever happen in our lifetime? Uber, for example, announced in 2017 that it was aiming to launch an eVTOL taxi service in Dallas and Dubai in 2020. Instead, Uber sold off its air taxi efforts to startup Joby in December 2020. According to a report in ArsTechnica , the idea goes something like this:
A United customer might travel a short distance by car to a nearby “vertiport” — perhaps in a suburban parking lot or atop an urban skyscraper. Then the customer might fly 20 or 30 miles to an airport in 15 or 20 minutes — a trip that might otherwise take an hour by car. eVTOL aircraft could also rapidly transport passengers between nearby cities — for example, San Francisco to Palo Alto, Dallas to Fort Worth, or Baltimore to Washington, D.C., the report said. Of course, it’s theoretically possible to do this by helicopter, and some wealthy people already do. But advocates argue that electric VTOL aircraft have the potential to be safer, quieter, and much cheaper than a helicopter. Archer says that its aircraft will produce “minimal noise,” and that the cost will be comparable to an Uber ride, the report said. Not only are electric motors more reliable than conventional engines, but they’re also light enough that you can put several of them on a single aircraft, offering an extra margin of safety. Palo Alto’s Archer Aviation might’ve been a fairly late entrant into the emerging eVTOL market, but its brute-force approach to grabbing top talent has made big waves in the industry. Credit: Archer Aviation. The ability to use several motors — together with sophisticated software — means greater design flexibility, opening the door to new types of eVTOL aircraft, the report said. Archer is also raising money from Stellantis, the company formed by the recent merger of carmakers Fiat Chrysler and PSA Peugeot. Stellantis will help Archer make the carbon-fiber fuselage for its aircraft. The investments are part of Archer’s plan to become a public company via a merger with a Special Purpose Acquisition Company. Archer’s first aircraft, due out in 2024, is designed for a range of 60 miles (100km) with a maximum speed of 150 miles per hour (240km/h), the report said. Initially, the aircraft will require a pilot. But eVTOL advocates hope that we’ll eventually have software sophisticated enough to steer the aircraft on its own — simultaneously eliminating the cost of paying the pilot and opening an extra seat for a passenger. Beyond the technical challenges of designing the new aircraft, the eVTOL vision also poses significant regulatory challenges. It takes several years for the FAA to sign off on a new aircraft design. Moreover, getting urban air transportation to work at scale will likely require an overhaul of the existing air traffic control system — not something that’s going to happen overnight. According to Global Newswire , the company is led by co-founders Brett Adcock and Adam Goldstein, who recently sold marketplace startup Vettery to The Adecco Group for over US$100 million. With Lore’s backing, Archer has the capital needed to lead the urban air mobility market, while leveraging Lore’s entrepreneurial perspective. Lore has a track record of founding ventures to solve consumer pain points. The current design offers a range of 60 miles plus appropriate reserves and overheads, using existing battery technology. Archer has attracted top industry talent, with eVTOL visionaries Tom Muniz and Geoff Bower leading engineering. The team consists of over 40 engineers, including talent from competing eVTOL startups Joby, Airbus Vahana and Wisk. Muniz, previously the VP of Engineering at Wisk, has been named Archer’s VP of Engineering, while Bower will serve as Chief Engineer, a title he held at Airbus Vahana. “Archer aims to lead the new third dimension of sustainable travel in urban environments,” said Archer co-founder Brett Adcock. “Our sights are set on the sky and to get there, we’re focused on hiring the top engineering talent to design, manufacture, and operate a fully electric VTOL aircraft to bring in the new age of transportation.”
