Alyssa Marin tossed a cross-court pass to Alexis Whitfield, who calmy drained a corner three-pointer to punctuate an uneven, but ultimately comfortable victory for the UCSB women’s basketball team. The Gauchos led by as much as 22 points in the first half but had to overcome a rough third quarter to secure an 87-75 victory over University of San Francico on Tuesday night at the Thunderdome. “I thought the first half offensively was as well as we have executed in a long time,” said UCSB women’s basketball coach Bonnie Hendrickson. “We got primary looks. We got good looks. We got clean looks. Then they did what they had to do, ‘we’re not going to let you run any of that.’ I don’t think we ran a designed play in the second half because of them trapping.”
Trailing 53-34 at halftime, University of San Francisco deployed full-court pressure and aggressive trapping. The philosophical shift from standard man-to-man principles, with zone sprinkled in, to frenetic double teams shifted the entire tenor of the game. The UCSB offense that converted 21-of-36 shots from the field in the first half grinded to a stand still as turnovers picked up and shots became hurried. A game that was on course to be a blowout all of a sudden offered a heavy dose of adversity. “A really good first game out of the gate for us. You don’t learn anything by beating people by 50,” Hendrickson said. “It’s fun, a lot less stressful, but you don’t learn a lot.”
The UCSB lead shrunk to 56-50 after a layup by Debora Dos Santos with 4:56 remaining in the third quarter capped off a 16-6 run by the visiting Dons to open the period. The two teams went back and forth for the remainder of the third quarter and UCSB entered the fourth quarter clinging to a 66-60 lead. “I think our biggest thing of course was we were really spread up and that’s one of the things that we kind of emphasize in practice a lot. We practice with the boys and of course they’re trying to speed us up and jumping at every ball,” Marin said. “I think once we really calmed down and like coach was saying we communicated, we flashed to the ball and after that everything worked a lot better.”
Slowly but sure the Gauchos regained control of the game and Jessica Grant’s hot shooting was a major factor. The Sophomore from San Marcos California knocked down three three-pointer in the fourth quarter, the first of which extended the UCSB lead to 71-64 with 6:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Grant’s second three-pointer put UCSB ahead 76-69 with 5:30 remaining and her third three-pointer increased the UCSB lead to 82-73 with 3:37 remaining. A cross over into a mid-range jumper by Marin gave the Gauchos an 84-75 lead with 2:50 remaining and the UCSB defense held the Dons scoreless for the remainder of the game. Nine Gauchos scored in the game, including 14 points and seven assists from Marin. Skylar Burke and grant chipped in 12 points apiece. UCSB will travel to Idaho State for its next game on Wednesday, November 15 beginning at 6p.m. The next home game is Sunday, November, 19  with tip off at 2 p.m.

“The sun will look like a crescent. We’ll see a giant bite taken out of the sun’s surface,” said astronomer Andrew Fraknoi, lecturer at the Fromm Institute at the University of San Francisco. A big, big dark disk will travel in front of the sun, he said, “and that’s the moon.”
Saturday’s astronomical event — an “annular” solar eclipse — is different from a total solar eclipse we experienced in 2017. Because the moon is in a distant part of its orbit, it’s too small to completely cover the sun, so we see a bright ring of light. A total eclipse occurs when the moon is closer to us, so it completely conceals the sun. Friday morning is a good time to start planning. Upon awakening, look east to find the sunrise — because that’s the same spot you’ll look for the eclipse on Saturday between 8:05 a.m. and 10:42 a.m., peaking at 9:20 a.m. If possible, get some altitude. Because the morning sun will be low on the eastern horizon, any hills or tall buildings will obscure its view. Finally, hope for clear skies. But even if morning skies are overcast, as predicted, a few gaps in the clouds could allow a glimpse. At its peak in the Bay Area, 83% of the sun will be covered by the moon. But it might feel no darker than if a wandering cloud passed over the sun. That’s because the remaining 17% of the sun is still blazingly bright. The only place in California with a full view will be the state’s far northeastern corner. “We’re pretty excited,” said bookstore owner Michael Sykes, a former Marin County resident who now lives in the remote Modoc County town of Cedarville, population 437, where hotel rooms have been booked for months. He may join festivities with other “ecliptophiles” in Modoc National Forest in Alturas, where the Rotary Club of Alturas will hold a pancake breakfast and the Alturas Lions Club will host a post-eclipse barbecue. Or he may ascend the nearby Warner Mountains for a more sweeping view. For the rest of us, here’s a handy guide to understand Saturday’s sky show:
Q: How rare are these eclipses? A: While so-called “annular eclipses” are not all that unusual, North America hasn’t seen one recently. The last big show was in the Middle East and South and Southeast Asia in December 2019. The last total solar eclipse to cross America occurred in August 2017, touching 14 states during its 70-mile-long path of totality and thrilling a nation that hadn’t seen a total eclipse so widely viewed since 1918. There will be another one next year, on April 8. Q: Who gets to see Saturday’s “ring of fire?”
A: It will be visible across a narrow band that crosses the corner of California and through parts of eight other states: Oregon, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Those closest to the centerline will experience darker skies. Outside of that strip, observers will see a crescent sun, or a partial solar eclipse. Q: Since it’s only a partial eclipse, is it safe to look at it? A: No. Exposure to the intense light from the sun — even if its just a slender slice — can cause injury to your retinas that may not heal. Special protective “eclipse glasses,” not just sunglasses, are needed. Thanks to the Moore Foundation, 13,000 public libraries — including most in the Bay Area — will be giving away eclipse glasses. But they’re available only while supplies last. One pair per household. If you can’t find eclipse glasses, try looking for small eclipse images on the ground under a leafy tree. Or use a kitchen colander or perforated serving spoon, held over your shoulder. The small holes in these objects act like pinhole cameras that project images of the eclipse below you. Events at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara have generated $2 billion in total economic impact for the region in the last decade, according to a report commissioned by the San Francisco 49ers. It covers the period from July 2014 through July 2023. The 49ers released the report this week in recognition of the team's 10th season at the stadium. "Levi's Stadium is an integral part of the Santa Clara community — as an employer, a tax and revenue driver for the city, and as a dynamic cultural attraction," Santa Clara Councilmember Karen Hardy said in a statement. "We have worked hard to ensure that Santa Clarans are benefiting from the stadium, and this report is an encouraging sign that for the past decade we've been able to accomplish that." The significant impact is attributed to nearly 1,000 special or corporate events, as well as 155 "major events," like Super Bowl 50, high-profile 49ers games, the College Football Playoff National Championship and international soccer matches. The stadium has also hosted concerts with marquee names like Elton John, Taylor Swift , Coldplay and The Weeknd. More recent big acts not captured in the report include Beyonce and Ed Sheeran. Visitors to stadium events, as well as visiting organizations, sponsors, vendors and the 49ers, provided more than $370 million in economic impact within the greater Bay Area region, over the decade covered by the report. "Levi's Stadium was built to be an economic asset for Santa Clara and this report shows that in less than 10 years, we are exceeding expectations and have had a profoundly positive effect on the city," 49ers President Al Guido said. "We've worked hard to deliver for the community, and it's gratifying to see that our partnership with the city is translating to billions of dollars for our neighbors." The $2 billion total economic impact figure accounts for both direct and indirect spending. Direct spending is money spent by visitors on things like "tickets, concessions, merchandise and parking, as well as before and after the events at local hotel, restaurant, entertainment, retail and other establishments," the report said. Indirect spending is calculated by taking into account the "ripple" effect of the direct spending dollars, such as when a restaurant uses money from a visitor to pay an employee or purchase food from a supplier. The 49ers noted in a statement that fiscal year 2022-23, ending in March, was "one of the most successful" in Levi's Stadium history, generating $251 million in economic impact. Not everyone in Santa Clara is sold on the overall benefits. A recent city report noted the stadium produced $8.8 million in profit from non-NFL events that fiscal year, half of which goes to the stadium authority for operations, with the remainder typically intended for the city's general fund to benefit residents. But the city -- embroiled in ongoing legal disputes with the 49ers about who should pay for higher than anticipated public safety costs for games -- decided to put its profits for the year into a "legal contingency reserve" fund, Finance Director Kenn Lee said at a Santa Clara City Council meeting last month. Mayor Lisa Gillmor said at the meeting that based on what was promised to the city when the stadium was being built, Santa Clara is getting "the crumbs," while the stadium is massively successful with "fabulous" events supported by the city. "We were supposed to get a huge benefit from the stadium," Gillmor said. "They're using our police force, our fire department, our city staff, we're all working so hard to get zero non-NFL revenue? That's unacceptable." The report from Rascher is based on primary research like surveys and direct data gathering during the events to estimate spending, as well as the collating of other already available data. Among other limitations, the report does not account for any costs to residents from possible negative impacts of the stadium and its events, such as "congestion, opportunity costs of having used the land in alternative ways, and direct out-of-pocket costs" to support events. Team officials said Monday they're more than 15 years ahead of schedule in paying the stadium's construction costs, saving an estimated $100 million in interest fees.
