Ubik architectural studio’s designer Gabriele Pinca completes the construction of a winery on the hills of Magliano in Toscana, a small village in the province of Grosseto, Italy . Aiming for seamless integration of the architecture into the vineyard landscape, the structure emerges from the ground in levels, eschewing any monumental attempt. The project blends with the countryside while reducing excavations, fitting its volume into the existing road network by rejoining the various routes at different levels and avoiding the construction of new roads into the natural landscape. Outlining the existing linear formations of the sloping scenery, the cellar sets up a trail of metallic ribbons creating a consistent flow between the road, the building, and the green field. Under the prominent metallic strips, the main structure forms out of stone materiality and opens glazed windows toward the yards. view from vineyard | all images © Alessandra Chemollo The elevations of the structure seem to embrace the lines of the rows of vines shaping green roofs on top of the building to ensure adequate thickness to plant local shrubs and create a gable of flowers. The entrance of the cellar rises from the ground in a sloping form, while the stone facades’ colors blend with the surrounding natural tones. Once through the entrance, the reception and tasting room open their large windows onto the countryside. The interior presents sharp and clean contours enhancing the texture and grain of the selected materials, such as wood and stone. A steel staircase flanked by a stone wall leads to the lower level, where exposed concrete and red resin flooring adorn the barrique cellar. The architecture by Florence-based design studio Ubik underlines the quest for sustainable solutions that do not end with technical and technological elements but rather include concepts for the use and reuse of local materials and building traditions. entrance to the winery
