AAF Seed Radar #10: Telivy, Arrived, Ascend, Caden and more

We track early stage investments of 250+ funds at AAF as part of our offensive strategy to have our finger on the pulse of what’s happening in the overall startup ecosystem. This list is a handful of those seed investments that we like and that we’ve found through Crunchbase, Angelist, Pitchbook, and our own network. All information is publicly available and none of this is financial advice. :) Ascend Summary: Ascend is a modern, all-in-one payments solution purpose-built for insurance. We automate insurance payments end-to-end — from online customer payments including premium financing to the distribution of commissions and carrier payables. We help digital distributors sell more insurance by simplifying operations, reducing payment friction and delivering the modern checkout experience customers expect. Team: Praveen Chekuri — First Engineer hire for Houseparty before leaving and starting Sheltr which was acquired by Hippo Insurance. He joined Hippo as Director of Engineering for close to two years where he was Director of Product Engineering — Various B2B Channels (Agencies, Builders & Integrations), Direct to Consumer Channels, Mobile, Customer Experiences, Hippo Home Care, Retention/Email Marketing/CMS, Growth/New Projects). Andrew Wynn — Led Instacart’s data and catalog team for 3 years prior to joining Looker where he led PM for all of Looker’s consumer-facing applications with the goal of driving product usage with new customer segments. He left Looker and cofounded Sheltr with Praveen before selling to Hippo where he joined as Director, Hippo Home Care for 2 years. Funding: Raised a $5.5M seed round from Boxgroup, First Round Capital, Firstmark, Susa, Max Mullen and South Park Commons. Arrived Summary: Arrived Homes is a provider of rental home investment services intended to help people achieve financial independence. It allows anyone to purchase shares of rental properties and earn a passive income while the company handles everything from property acquisition to necessary improvements and management of daily operations. The platform purchases and manages residential rental properties as well as allows its residents to co-invest in its fund. Team: Ryan Frazier — Co-founded Datarank which was acquired by Simply Measured where he stayed for 4 years as a GM. Simply Measured was acquired by Sprout Social where he joined as GM for a year before founding Arrived in 2019. Funding: Raised a $10M Seed and a $20M debt facility from Good Friends, Time Ventures, Neo, Spencer Rascoff, Dara, Bezos Expeditions and Core Innovation Capital Telivy Summary: Telivy’s mission is to empower retail agencies and SAAS platforms with an embedded turnkey multi-carrier cyber insurance solution, providing the fastest and easiest solution to get cyber insurance for their small business customers. Team: Naren Sathiya — Co-Founder & CEO — Naren is a financially savvy software engineer who has an entrepreneurial track record of funding from YC. Before Telivy, he founded and built Trusu (YCW17), a management platform for restaurants in Hong Kong. Having prior engineering experience at IBM and Fibo, Naren then served as technical lead at Hippo Insurance, utilizing a small team to build their distribution channels; his leadership was responsible for 25% of Hippo’s revenue and $30 million in GWPs. He graduated from UC Irvine with a B.A. in Business Administration and Computer Science. Ben Grosser — Co-Founder & CPO — Ben has extensive experience in the insurance industry serving as a top underwriter at Travelers and Philadelphia Insurance Companies. In 2017, he joined At-Bay at its early stage and led the design, development, deployment, and active management of their first 3 cyber insurance products to market. Ben then led strategic partnerships at Pathpoint, a wholesale brokerage for the insurance industry, before moving on to co-founding Telivy. Funding: Successfully raised a $2.5M seed round post YC-Demo Day from Thomvest Ventures, AAF Management, GFC, Finventure Studios, Immeasurable, Maschmeyer Group Ventures and OnDeck Runway Fund. HeyRenee Summary: HeyRenee is the personal health concierge, everyone, especially those managing chronic illnesses and conditions, has wanted and needed. The patient-centric HeyRenee platform is designed to consolidate, coordinate, communicate and connect all aspects of medical care. Through long-sought data integration with healthcare providers, the platform endeavors to eventually help all Americans, the underserved especially, connect with their entire healthcare team and relieve the burdens of appointment scheduling, in-home visits, prescription medication administration to Telehealth and remote patient monitoring, and more Team: Nick Desai — Previously Founder/CEO of Heal. Serial Entrepreneur. MS Electrical Engineering, UCLA. BS Electrical and Computer Engineering, UC Irvine. HeyRenee will help achieve health equity through innovation — bridging the digital divide to help those who need it most, and to do another startup with my best friend and wife, Dr. Renee Dua. Funding: Raised a $3.5M Seed round from Quiet Capital, SaaS Ventures, GFC, Mucker Capital and Fika Ventures Caden Summary: Caden is building the world’s first Personal Cloud, built to completely disrupt the consumer data market, and reverse the flow of information between consumers and brands. Caden’s 2 main functions are 1) a user-owned cloud database that brands use to store consumer data, and 2) a direct connection with that user in order to request personal data in order to provide a better experience. Team: CEO/Founder John Roa is a lifelong entrepreneur, technologist, philanthropist, business investor, and writer. He has founded and managed six technology companies since learning to program at age 11. His largest company, ÄKTA, went on to be one of the fastest growing companies in America in both 2013 and 2014 and was fully acquired by Salesforce Inc. (NYSE: CRM) in September 2015. Funding: Caden raised a $5M Seed round from AME Cloud Ventures, Motivate Venture Capital, Merrick Ventures, AAF Management and Jaws Ventures. Treet Summary: Treet helps apparel brands become more circular and control their secondhand market by launching a peer-to-peer resale marketplace. Treet Marketplaces operate as second sites where their customers can buy and sell used items from each other in exchange for cash or credit back to the brand. Treet handles all of the logistics and support while brands share the profit. Team: Jake Disraeli (CEO): managed all of the entrepreneurial programs at Cal Poly SLO and helped hundreds of entrepreneurs successfully launch their products on Indiegogo. Sonia Yang (CTO): 3 years at Blueprint Tech starting as a project developer and leaving as Internal VP, joined AirBnB as a software Engineer for another 3 years before co-founding Treet. Funding: Raised $2.9M Seed from Bling Capital, Matchstick, Techstars, BAM Ventures, BBG, Green Meadow, Interlace Ventures, V1.VC and Alante Capital Allocate Summary: Allocate is platform that enables investors to discover and invest in high-quality venture funds Allocate eliminates the guesswork and friction of venture investing. We do this by bringing extensively researched top venture fund opportunities to you and digitally enabling the entire process from discovery, investing, to post-investment reporting and transacting.Through Allocate feeder vehicles that aggregate investor capital, you can invest at minimums lower than typical fund minimums, allowing you to invest comfortably without all of the costs of traditional solutions Team: Samir Kaji (Founder, CEO): 10+ yrs at SVB becoming Managing Director, 8 yrs at First Republic as Senior Managing Director, and Fellow at Kauffman Hana Yang (Founder): Partner Manager at Fundly, Managing Director at First Republic, and Kauffman Fellow Funding: Raised a $5M Seed round from Fika, Liquid 2, Urban Innovation, Tusk Ventures & Ulu Ventures to name a few. Mayk Summary: Mayk provides a virtual music studio designed to help people make original songs for streaming or social media. Team: Founded in 2020 by Stefan Henriquez (CEO), former head of Global Marketing at TikTok and CMO at Cameo, and Akiva Bamberger (CTO), a previous software engineer on Snap’s Spectacles. Funding: Raised $4M seed round from Greycroft, Slow Ventures, Firstminute Capital, Chicago Ventures, Steven Galanis (founder, CEO of Cameo), and other angels (e.g., Mr Beast, T-Pain, Zach Katz, etc.). Dutch Summary: Dutch is a pet telehealth service that specializes in treating anxiety and allergies. It connects pet owners with vets to prescribe medication and treatments for ailments ranging from anxiety to fleas to allergies, with prescriptions shipped to their door. Currently operates in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, South Dakota, Virginia, Idaho and Indiana; Plan prices vary by condition and pet type, but begin as low as $39 per month. Included is the consultation, treatment plan, unlimited vet follow-ups, and free direct shipment of relevant medication. Team: Joe Spector (Founder, CEO): Previously co-founded Hims and launched Hers a year into the business (merged and SPAC’d with $1.6B market cap). Funding: Raised a $5M Seed round led by Forerunner Ventures; others include Trust Ventures, Bling Capital, Bradley Horowitz (VP of Product, Google) and Andrew Dudm (Founder/CEO, Hims & Hers) Flyp Summary: Flyp is a mobile app that allows users to cash in on their used stuff by partnering with professional resellers. Spearheading the reseller revolution and empowering the secondhand gig economy. Team: James Kawas — James previously started Saily Inc, a company that developed one of the top-ranking secondhand shopping apps in the US with 500k users. (The Saily team joined Japan’s billion-dollar commerce giant Mercari, Inc ahead of its IPO). A recipient of the $100K Thiel Fellowship grant and a college dropout, the 23-year-old’s work has attracted press attention from around the world and has been featured in publications like Forbes, The Huffington Post, Entrepreneur Magazine, Yahoo! Finance, Bloomberg Businessweek, Mashable, and VICE. James is on the list of Forbes 30 Under 30 and has been honored “Young Entrepreneur Of The Year” in 2016 by Entrepreneur Magazine.
