The extension’s last Greenhouse Training Online course for 2018 begins November 5. Interpret water quality tests for irrigation of greenhouse and nursery crops, select appropriate water treatment technologies and design a water treatment and monitoring system. Irrigation Water & Treatment is the final course for 2018 in the Greenhouse Training Online series offered by the University of Florida IFAS Extension , winner of the 2018 American Society for Horticultural Science Extension Division Education Materials Award. This is taught at an advanced level, designed for an experienced grower or technical manager. Lessons are offered in English and Spanish, and are taught by professors from six universities in the United States. The course runs from November 5 to December 7, 2018. It costs $US 199 per participant, and includes a personalized certificate of completion. Over 4 weeks (no classes over Thanksgiving week), there are streaming video lessons, readings and assignments. DOWNERS GROVE, Illinois — All-America Selections , for the 2018 Landscape Design Challenge, went a bit out of the traditional garden comfort zone with a new theme. This year’s theme was “Get Social in the Garden” and AAS left it up to each garden to interpret how to carry out this theme. Using social media was certainly well-used, according to a press release, but many gardens went above and beyond with the social theme, which is explained in each garden’s description below. For this challenge, AAS provided the gardens with winner seed from the last five years. They also had the option to incorporate any older AAS Winners from the past 85 years. Gardens not only had to create and execute a design based on this year’s theme, but were also encouraged to generate publicity via social media and “real life” social events. MSU’s Display Garden has some very good, permanent design features such as the gazebo, which provide a strong focal point, according to the release. Surrounding the gazebo is an orderly arrangement of AAS Winner plants and engaging features such as the bridge, river bed and fountain. This backdrop provides a great location for photography and selfies, promoting the “Get Social” theme. Judges gave high points for both plant health and garden quality. Volunteers provided substantial documentation of their social media activities and described the numerous events they promoted on Facebook. The theme hashtag, #AASWinner, and signage were prominently displayed in printed media and in the garden. Additionally, the inclusion of local garden personalities and businesses adds a sense of community and extends the reach of their efforts, especially via videos. "I scream. You scream. We all scream for ice cream!" … and AAS Winners! With a slight twist to the theme, visitors to the Kenosha County Center were treated to an AAS Display garden tastefully decorated as an old-fashioned ice cream social. By combining an old-fashioned “social” event with the modern interpretation of "social", Kenosha provided a fun and refreshing break from our fast-paced world. Colorful plastic shaped waffle cones and ice cream cone sip cups served as planting containers as did an ice cream bucket and base of an ice cream maker resembling a cake cone. The repurposed satellite dish became a super-sized Delizz strawberry sundae. With inverted cone hats, gnome shaped signs were sprinkled throughout the garden's raised beds to share the scoop on the history of ice cream gardens and the many different “flavors” of AAS Winners. Judges felt that the plantings of AAS Winners were dense, colorful and in good health plus the garden location was quite prominent and well used. The Master Gardeners at Tippecanoe used a party theme which tied together multiple mini-themes in this year’s garden. Strategically placed picture frames with attractive backgrounds throughout the garden created multiple “selfie-ready” spots for garden visitors. A "Pathways for Pollinators" gateway provided another attractive theme garden, equally ready for photos. A tomato tasting with garden visitors further educated the public and provided fodder for social media posts. The MGATC posted their garden regularly on Facebook and consistently used the #AASWinners hashtag. All in all, MGATC used a variety of media to promote the garden and made good use of materials and ideas provided by All-America Selections. Category 1 Honorable Mention Winners:
Indianapolis, Indiana. For the second year in a row, the Purdue Extension in Marion County has excelled at the AAS Display Garden Challenge! Their application did a wonderful job of describing the garden, giving relevant details about how the garden embraced the "Get Social" theme as well as evidence about the numbers of AAS Winners used in the garden. To encourage photography and posting on social media, their design featured masses of color and an inviting garden atmosphere. The garden added three types of seating areas to encourage relaxation and a longer visit to the garden. “Photo ops” were created with a vertical wall garden, and two archways made from metal fencing for climbing plants (one arch with a 9-foot span featured two Jasper tomato plants). Additional “Get Social” signs with the hashtag #AASWinners were sprinkled throughout the garden as additional reminders. All AAS winners had variety markers which goes a long way with the challenge’s judges. Those judges also praised how well explained and documented the Social media postings were. Lastly, a lunchtime lecture on “Plants We Liked This Year” promoted their favorite AAS Winners in the 2018 garden. Another multiple year winner is Jardin Daniel A Sequin! The AAS Display garden was located in the "agora" site right at the entrance of the garden which is a social gathering place large enough to accommodate a lot of people. To showcase the All-America Selections Winners, a blend of flowers and vegetables were interplanted in the terraced flowerbed of the agora with each plant clearly identified. Challenge judges noted how the attractive design came together because of careful attention to color, form, texture and variety. Signage in the garden promotes AAS and the competition including a nice selfie poster used by garden visitors then posted to Social media. Clark Botanic Garden is a hidden treasure among the suburban sprawl of northwest Long Island, according to the release. This year, just beyond the main entry gates, was a garden overflowing with All-America Selection Winners. It was well-conceived for color, form, texture and variety. Garden staff created a large kiosk with information about how to "Get Social In the Garden". Behind the stunning entry is the Family Community Garden with display beds of AAS Vegetables. Clark Botanic concentrated their efforts for the challenge at the entrance annual beds since visitors take pictures upon entering the garden. Throughout the summer, they found visitors were commenting about how they had seen pictures on social media and heard how beautiful the garden was which resulted in more events booked at the garden. In addition, more people were asking to volunteer in the gardens. The power of Social media! Category III: Over 100,000 visitors per year
 
Denver Botanic Gardens’ Horticulturist used 80’s music to bring the "Get Social in the Garden" to life. Each garden bed was designed around, and named for, a pop song from the 1980's. Flower varieties were chosen based on color or texture that gave a visual of the song such as Salvia Sumer Jewel White for Billy Idol's "White Wedding.” A song list played as they planted the garden last spring and as visitors strolled through, were delighted upon learning about the design theme. Once the plants grew in, garden visitors were encouraged to take selfies then post them on Social media with the hashtag #AASWinners. The Gardens clearly had a strong social media presence before this competition and is highly competent in engaging the online public. We applaud their ideas, engagement and execution of this year’s Challenge theme. The horticulturist team at the Montreal Botanical Garden decided to carry out this year’s design theme by bringing people together. They created places for garden visitors to sit down, relax, take a photo or selfie, and post it to social media. They integrated the AAS flower bed into the Novelty garden, using 25 AAS Winner plants, both ornamental and vegetables that bloom all season. The design was divided into several color schemes from pink, orange and reds to blues and whites, all offering different textures like the vertical stems of Allium ‘Bunching Warrior’ that contrast with Cuphea ‘Flori Glory Diana’ or Capsicum ‘Onyx Red’. Metal structures were also integrated to support the tomatoes and the beans. The crowning glory was the majestic blooming arch made of Petunia ’Evening Scentsation’ and Gypsophila ‘Gypsy White Improved’ representing the blue and white colors of Facebook. The blue arch became the hot spot in the garden when three blue Adirondack chairs (with #AASWINNERS printed on the arms) were installed on the lawn behind the arch. These chairs are the focus point of the arch which makes a perfectly framed photo when visitors are sitting in the chairs. Throughout the summer of 2018, visitors to Green Bay Botanical Garden were enthralled by their first-ever visiting exhibit, Nature Connects®: Art with LEGO® Bricks which featured larger-than-life sculptures made with LEGO® Bricks. While they searched the Garden for these sculptures, they also discovered a variety of incredibly beautiful plants and blooms including AAS Winners in spaces throughout the garden. The snap and share stations, or “Selfie Stations”, were a huge hit for visitors to share their experience with the garden and promote #AASWinners on social media. Each station was built of decorative wood pieces with trough planters which create a frame of AAS Winners around the viewing window. By placing a number of snap and share stations that highlighted AAS Winners and providing visitors with a white flag to vote on their favorites plant varieties in their AAS Trial Gardens, they calculated that more than 45,600 visitors this summer got social in the garden! Graduate students studying to become floricultural scientists and educators are encouraged to apply by the Feb. 1, 2019 deadline. The American Floral Endowment (AFE) is accepting applications for the Altman Family Scholarship and the Paul Ecke, Jr. Scholarship. Applications are due by Feb. 1, 2019. These merit-based, prestigious scholarships are for graduate students who have the skills and passion to become leading floricultural scientists and educators. Applicants must be in the process of successfully completing either a bachelor’s or master’s degree in horticulture or a related field (e.g., agricultural engineering, entomology, agricultural marketing and economics, plant pathology, etc.) and must have the intention of pursuing an MS or Ph.D. degree on a full-time basis. The Altman Family Scholarship was established by Ken and Deena Altman — owners of Altman Plants — who support numerous efforts to improve education and research for the industry. They are highly appreciative of the field of horticulture and established the Center for Applied Horticultural Research as an effort to help the industry. “By winning this scholarship, the funding will be directly invested back into the industry by allowing a promising young professional to continue developing a strong future career in horticulture,” said 2018 Altman recipient Nathan Nordstedt. The Paul Ecke, Jr. Scholarship honors the late Paul Ecke, Jr., who made significant contributions to the floriculture industry and believed strongly in research and education. He was concerned about the future of floriculture and recognized that innovative researchers and educators are necessary for the continued success of the industry. One student will receive $5,000 for two consecutive years, providing that they continue to meet requirements for this duration and submit an annual update. “Having the industry’s interest and support is fundamental and the Paul Ecke Scholarship will help progress my research,” said 2018 Ecke recipient Melissa Muñoz. “I am very excited to continue this research that I hope will make a difference and improve the conditions for the floral industry.”

FLORALIFE and OASIS Grower Solutions , divisions of Smithers-Oasis Company , a provider of solutions throughout the plant and flower supply chain from propagation to consumer, have recently purchased a library database of research, technical and trade journal articles on horticulture-related topics. The database, a consortium of 40 years, contains more than 20,000 articles on ornamental plants, as well as fruits and vegetables, and can be searched by keywords, authors and topics. The library database was acquired from renowned researcher, Dr. George Staby, a past professor of floriculture at The Ohio State University and founder of Chain of Life Network. Staby spent his entire career immersed in the studies of floriculture and postharvest physiology, conducting research projects on a range of topics from biochemical studies of plant processes to the effects of ethylene on the longevity of cut flowers and potted plants. “Having access to this database will be beneficial in our research and product development initiatives,” explained Anil Ranwala, manager of research and development, FLORALIFE. “Our scientific approach is dependent on this type of research—the more knowledge we have, the better solutions we can develop to enhance the consumer experience.”
The FLORALIFE and OASIS Grower Solutions research and development departments will continue to add to the database, and eventually the intention is to share the information with customers and industry partners. In addition to this database of floriculture articles, FLORALIFE and OASIS Grower Solutions also purchased a crop information database that categorizes species, varieties, shelf life and other information on crops. "We are honored that Dr. Staby, who FLORALIFE and OASIS Grower Solutions have had a long-time relationship with, was willing to share his valuable resources that he worked his entire life to develop,” said Jim Daly, vice president, FLORALIFE/grower global operations and corporate research. “This initiative also supports the Smithers-Oasis ‘Follow the Plants’ strategy.”

When singer Sinead O’Connor recently went missing and was considered to be suicidal, many fans were sympathetic online. However, many more people took to social media in a far less sympathetic manner. A leading psychologist has now warned that the barrage of negative comments in social media shows that our culture has learned nothing about mental health. In fact, Dublin-based counselor Owen Connolly has described the huge number of vilifying comments relating to O’Connor’s story as “shocking.”
The Inquisitr reported that on Sunday, O’Connor had gone for a bicycle ride in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette and had not returned. Officials were searching for the Irish singer, who was considered to be suicidal . Reportedly also on Sunday, O’Connor had used her public Facebook page to discuss what appeared to be a very private legal issue relating to her children, which raised even more concern over the singer’s well being. Independent.ie quotes Connolly as saying, “We have learned nothing. We’re very good at vilifying people, particularly people like Sinead, we can attack them. They go through the most awful time in their lives and they need to be comforted rather than attacked.”
He went on to say that O’Connor has been having a “particularly harsh time” in her life, explaining that while people can appear very powerful on stage and their performances can be amazing, it can be very different for them off the stage. Connolly said that people don’t understand and prefer to “have a go at her,” saying, “I’m shocked at what’s been happening online to her.”

Explaining that this makes matters worse for the person concerned, he said he doesn’t see anyone “putting an arm around Sinead O’Connor,” but instead people say awful things and it drives the person away. Reportedly, in Ireland there are many mental health campaigns, often led by celebrities, and some are having some success, but he says a change in attitudes towards mental issues is not showing on the ground. “We are doing absolutely nothing for mental health. We don’t have the provisions for mental health in this country. It’s like a puzzle we don’t want to know. We have lots of fundraising happening, but we don’t see things happening on the ground.”
According to Connolly, people like O’Connor need comforting. While mental health patients get medicine and doctors, this aspect is lacking, and he says people are not being heard properly. “Kindness is the only way. We forget that that’s the most important thing in any relationship – it’s putting your arm around them.”
Dr. Arthur Cassidy, a social media psychologist in Ireland who specializes in celebrities and internet trolls, agrees with Connolly. There is no denying that Sinead O’Connor is a public figure. O’Connor has 644,000 followers on Facebook and tends to use social media as a forum for the problems in her life. However, this does not mean she is any less entitled to being treated with empathy and care. According to Cassidy, many social media users appear to feel it is expected of them to comment negatively, especially relating to celebrities. He said that many of these users make pejorative remarks about people, especially celebrities, online and that it is “grossly unethical for people online to make statements about people who have gone missing, to make assumptions about a character.”
As reported by Irish Central, Cassidy went on to say he has spent much time this year dealing with trolls attacking celebrities and that we must remember that words can be very dangerous, especially online. He says education is required in schools in order to teach children “learned optimism” and about mental health and how to use social media with awareness. “We have to demonstrate through social media our empathy and concern for those who have to face the consternation of media attention.”
Cassidy explained that people fail to understand mental health and the whole idea of suicide, as each case is very individual. He added that we tend to let down our guard online and end up saying things we wouldn’t normally say face to face, totally unmindful of the fact that what we say will be hurtful to the victim. “Everyone is human and we all have varying degrees of physical and mental health. We should be using Facebook constructively rather than destructively, and we need to be supporting celebrities.”
Irish Central reports that O’Connor herself spoke out about how hard it is for people – and celebrities in particular – to openly talk about their mental illness. In an interview following Robin Williams’ suicide, O’Connor reportedly opened up to Sky’s Entertainment Week, saying, “When you admit that you are anything that could be mistakenly, or otherwise, perceived as ‘mentally ill’ you know that you are going to get treated like dirt so you don’t go tell anybody, and that’s why people die.”

Cutting through the boundaries of class and region, making cancer care accessible and affordable to one and all is TMC's constant aim, and TMC Online is an endeavor to achieve this objective. "
Emphasizing the need for uniform evidence-based decision-making across India, Badwe said that the TMC Online is a step towards this objective. He pointed out that a major benefit of the TMC-Navya's efforts would be to prevent cancer patients traveling from far off places to metros to get evidence-based expert treatment decisions. Badwe said, "There are a few hundred expert oncologists who are mostly concentrated in the metro cities, but the number of cancer patients needing expert treatment decisions runs into millions. For instance, only the TMC in Parel sees over 60,000 patients each year, including new patients, follow-up cases, referrals or second opinion cases, from India, South Asia, Africa, Middle East and South-east Asia. These consultations are in the form of emails to the doctors or personal visits which are expensive and inefficient, depriving them of an opportunity to get expert opinions and treatment planning from the TMC. "
