At the board meeting on Friday, Flutter received pushback from 1000 university students who invested in the firm via the Trinity Student Managed Fund. Trinity students are “not happy” with Flutter’s record on helping problem gamblers - particularly young males - according to Olwyn Patterson, head of environment, social and governance (ESG) and social responsibility at the fund. CEO Peter Jackson said Flutter had done more than its competitors to tackle problem gambling, measuring the percentage of revenue from players with a deposit limit (in Australia) and the percentage of those who self-exclude within the year (in the UK and Ireland). He said the average Flutter user spends just €10 a week. “These are small amounts. Some of our competitors start with much higher average levels of spending. We constantly are leading this race to the top.”
Last month, Flutter reported a £288m loss before tax, with adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of £1,001m, 18pc lower than 2020. Flutter recently added Italian online games site Sisal and UK online bingo provider Tombola to its portfolio. The buyouts follow a 2020 merger with the Toronto-listed Stars Group and the 2018 acquisition of US giant FanDuel. Mr Jackson said Flutter was concentrating on recent acquisitions and the US market, and was not looking to make any further acquisitions. “We’ve got arms quite full dealing with all of that at the moment, but also continuing to win in America. That’s where we’ve got to keep our focus. The opportunity there is enormous.”
Flutter is unlikely to float FanDuel any time soon, Mr Jackson hinted, saying the market for initial public offerings is “not open” and that the firm did “not need” to list in the US. Flutter publishes its first quarter 2022 results next week.

The former owners of gaming website Tombola donated more than £12m to charity – its largest ever contribution - in the year before it was acquired by new owners. The Sunderland-based business, Europe’s largest online bingo firm, creates and develops bingo software and games from its North East head office and also has bases in Copenhagen, Gibraltar, Milan and Madrid. The company was first launched in 2006 by Philip Cronin and has seen huge growth over the last 16 years, gradually expanding its presence in the UK and Europe. Last November the family firm was snapped up by Flutter , owners of Paddy Power and Betfair, in a £402m cash deal that the betting giant completed last month. Now Tombola – which is known for its sponsorship of the ITV programme I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here – has published accounts for the year ended April 30 2021, the last full financial year that the Cronin family owned the online empire, showing donations of £12.6m were “made to a number of local charities and other institutions” during the year. The company has made donations to local charities ever since it was founded, but rarely divulges the recipients, aside from a £500,000 donation it made to The Foundation of Light in 2017. In its first ever set of accounts for a large company, published on Companies House to cover the 2007 financial year, it noted an £800 charitable donation, and subsequent years have seen it give out between £16,020 in 2009 and £281,119 in 2020. The accounts are published seven years after founder Mr Cronin set a target of £100m turnover, and accounts for the company covering the year ended April 30 2021 show turnover rose 36% from £120.1m to £164.2m. Operating profit also rocketed, from £12.03m to £25.5m. The original profit figure stood at £37.7m, but included the huge £12.2m charity donation as an exceptional item. The company also significantly increased its workforce, from an average of 608 to 760 employees. No dividend was paid to the shareholders for a second year running. The report accompanying the accounts said: “Group turnover has increased to £164.2m from £120.1m in the previous year as the group continues to thrive and grow its market share across the UK and Europe. The group's net profit before tax increased to £25.5m from £12.0m as we continued to invest in our people, our products and opening up new territories. “The group is focused on the continual research and development of its products and invests much time and resource to ensure the highest quality of its product.”
The online bingo company moved into Tombola House, its new £8m base at Rose Wharf, in 2018 and the bonded warehouse transformation won the RIBA North East Client of the Year award for Ryder Architecture last year. Read More

Sports betting and gaming company Flutter Entertainment has completed the acquisition of online bingo operator Tombola in a deal with an enterprise value of £402m. Having received all necessary regulatory confirmations, the deal completed on Monday 10 January in cash, fully funded through Flutter's current cash and debt facilities. It was revealed in November that Tombola, with teams primarily located in Sunderland and Gibraltar, had been acquired by the Dublin-headquartered company, which numbers Paddy Power, Betfair and Sky Betting and Gaming among its brands. Flutter said the addition of Tombola diversified its products, introduced an engaged and sustainable player base, and enhanced its online gaming presence in its core UK market. Speaking when the deal was announced, Flutter chief executive Peter Jackson said: "Tombola is a business we have long admired for its product expertise, highly recreational customer base and focus on sustainable play. "The brand aligns closely with Flutter's safer gambling strategy, a key area of focus for us. I am excited to combine Flutter's digital marketing expertise with Tombola's operational capabilities within the UK & Ireland division." Global investment bank GCA Altium acted as adviser to Tombola.
