It was Hot Dog Day on Wednesday so we discussed the iconic sandwich (see story below) on my radio show that morning. Very quickly, a sometimes heated debate broke out on whether a hot dog should ever have ketchup on it. I say no, unless you’re a kid. Just based on texts, emails and calls to my show, I’d say most people are with me on this. One person suggested whether ketchup should be allowed on a hot dog was dividing families long before we ever heard of COVID-19. Believe it or not, there’s a long list of so-called hot dog etiquette. For example, dress the dog, not the bun…and always start with the wet condiments, followed by the chunky ones like onions and sauerkraut. I’ve never been a fan of sauerkraut on a hot dog but I do feel mustard is a must. I also plan on trying cream cheese on my next hot dog. Listener Jason says when a hot dog cart outside a Nashville bar served him a dog with cream cheese on it, it was a game changer for him. SANDWICH OR NOT? According to a new survey, most people (57%) consider a hot dog a sandwich. The dictionary agrees. Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” The survey also asked about the best way to cook a hot dog. On the barbeque was the top answer at nearly 60%. 17% boil their hot dogs, while 13% use the microwave. Article content
RESTAURANT COMPLAINTS SPIKE
According to Yelp, restaurant complaints are on the rise. And the review site is blaming shrinkflation. A growing number of customers are grumbling online about receiving smaller portions as diners struggle with higher food costs. Yelp says reviews containing inflationary language are up 28%. They’re a bit pricey at $4.39 (60 cents extra in a combo) but well worth it as far as I’m concerned. McDonald’s is now offering waffle fries and they’re really good. Mickey Dee’s tweeted the news recently but forgot to mention they wouldn’t be available until the next day so I had to make two trips to the drive-thru near my home in south Winnipeg in order to give them a try. Waffle fries are fairly common now but I’ve been a big fan since I first tried them at a sandwich shop up in Gimli many years ago. And while waffle fries are easier to find these days, it’s going to be difficult to track down better ones than what McDonald’s is currently serving. But let’s face it, even their regular fries are the best of the fast food chains, as long as they’re fresh. Also worth mentioning, at least one local McD’s is offering a $2 cheeseburger as its “Pothole Special.”

CHOCOLATE CREAM COLD BREW
I haven’t sampled it yet but Starbucks has a new beverage for summer. Chocolate Cream Cold Brew features Starbucks Cold Brew sweetened with vanilla syrup and topped with chocolate cream cold foam. “When creating this beverage, we wanted to bring our customers a drink that would transport them back to their favourite summer memories with each sip,” said Rosalyn Batingan of the Starbucks beverage development team. “The classic combination of coffee and chocolate is reminiscent of a chocolate milkshake or that last bit of melted chocolate ice cream on a warm summer day to recreate the sweet, creamy flavour of summers past.”
FROZEN FRUIT ROLL-UPS
It’s the latest TikTok food trend. To create the snack, just unroll Fruit Roll-Ups and put them in the freezer for a few hours. The finished product is a colourful and crunchy Fruit Roll-Up sheet. Some people take it to a whole other level by layering two Fruit Roll-Ups on top of each other and then using a cookie cutter to make a circle shape which you put in a taco stand to mold it into a shell. The shell is then filled with three small scoops of rainbow sherbert and topped with chamoy sauce, Tanjin seasoning and Nerds candy. Advertisement 3

CHILI PEPPERS & CANCER
Chili peppers could be the secret ingredient to beating cancer. Researchers at Marshall University say capsaicin, the substance that makes peppers hot and spicy, can also keep multiple forms of cancer from growing. The scientists say their biggest hurdle is figuring out the best way to deliver the capsaicin to patients. MEAT TAX
Almost four in 10 people would support a meat tax. As meat prices spike due to higher inflation, a new survey says 37% favour a 10% tax on meat in an effort to cut consumption. Gen Zers, people under 25 years old, are the biggest supporters of this idea. Eating less meat would be better for the environment and potentially people’s health. Revenue from the tax would go to livestock farmers to diversify their business. Opponents of the idea worry about low-income communities where meat is easier to get and access to fresh fruit and vegetables is limited. Advertisement 4

For the first time ever, food has been grown in soil collected from the Moon. It’s like the plot of the 2015 movie “The Martian,” starring Matt Damon. The dirt dates back half a century to the Apollo missions. It’s a first step toward producing food and oxygen on the Moon during future space missions. ADVENTUROUS FOOD CHOICES
DoorDash has released its third annual Deep Dish Report and the bottom line is people are becoming more adventurous with their food choices. Pad Thai, Tabouleh, Baklava and Aloo Paratha (I had to Google two of them) have all made this year’s top 10 list of foods ordered. ATTRACTING MEAT EATERS
A new study says restaurants need to serve more vegetarian options to attract meat eaters. By serving at least 75% vegetarian dishes, people who eat meat are significantly more likely to order vegetarian meals. When menus only feature 25 to 50% vegetarian options, customers stick to their meat eating ways. CREAM CHEESE SHORTAGE
I’ve had no problem getting my hands on cream cheese when I’ve needed it for my morning bagel but there’s apparently a shortage in some places. To the point where Kraft has apologized and is offering up $20 vouchers for dessert supplies for customers who can’t make cheesecake. A total of 18,000 vouchers have already been given away this weekend. COOKING SHOW REPLACES DR. OZ
TV’s Dr. Oz is being replaced by a cooking show. Mehmet Oz (that’s his full name) is running for the US Senate. His last episode will air on Jan. 14. The Good Dish, a combination cooking-talk show which will be hosted by Daphne Oz (Dr. Oz’s daughter), Gail Simmons and Jamika Pessoa, will serve up a dish of the day. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLOODY MARY! The Bloody Mary is 100 years old. They’re celebrating at Harry’s Bar in Paris where the drink was invented in 1921.
