HAL’S KITCHEN: Is ketchup allowed on a hot dog?

Jul 23, 2022

Author of the article: Article content It was Hot Dog Day on Wednesday so we discussed the iconic sandwich (see story below) on my radio show that morning. Very quickly, a sometimes heated debate broke out on whether a hot dog should ever have ketchup on it. I say no, unless you’re a kid. Just based on texts, emails and calls to my show, I’d say most people are with me on this. One person suggested whether ketchup should be allowed on a hot dog was dividing families long before we ever heard of COVID-19. Believe it or not, there’s a long list of so-called hot dog etiquette. For example, dress the dog, not the bun…and always start with the wet condiments, followed by the chunky ones like onions and sauerkraut. I’ve never been a fan of sauerkraut on a hot dog but I do feel mustard is a must. I also plan on trying cream cheese on my next hot dog. Listener Jason says when a hot dog cart outside a Nashville bar served him a dog with cream cheese on it, it was a game changer for him. I’d love to read your thoughts on all this in an email to Hal@HalAnderson.ca . This story is brought to you by the snap of a Winnipeg Old Country weiner… Advertisement 2 HAL'S KITCHEN: Is ketchup allowed on a hot dog? Back to video A sometimes heated debate broke out on Hal’s show on whether a hot dog should ever have ketchup on it. For the record, Hal says no, unless you’re a kid. Photo by Blair Gable /THE WINDSOR STAR SANDWICH OR NOT? According to a new survey, most people (57%) consider a hot dog a sandwich. The dictionary agrees. Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” The survey also asked about the best way to cook a hot dog. On the barbeque was the top answer at nearly 60%. 17% boil their hot dogs, while 13% use the microwave. Article content RESTAURANT COMPLAINTS SPIKE According to Yelp, restaurant complaints are on the rise. And the review site is blaming shrinkflation. A growing number of customers are grumbling online about receiving smaller portions as diners struggle with higher food costs. Yelp says reviews containing inflationary language are up 28%. WORLD’S BESTAURANTS Article content For the second year in a row, a Copenhagen restaurant has been named the best on the planet. Geranium serves a meat-free menu and is only open four days a week so head chef Rasmus Kofoed can maintain a work-life balance. TheWorlds50Best.com says Kofoed “has an intuitive ability to put together truly stunning dishes that make the most of colour, empty space and accurate volume of ingredients, creating synergy between flavour, aestheticism and a sense of flow that runs throughout the menu.” MARY’S BROWN’S BGC DAY Mary Brown’s Chicken will be raising money this week for a great cause. BGC Canada, formerly known as the Boys & Girls Club, helps kids and teens develop the skills they need to succeed. On Wednesday, Mary Brown’s will be donating $2 from every meal, combo and feast sold in its stores, through its app and online. Customers will also have the option of adding a donation to their order. The successful candidate will be responsible for sourcing new products, leading “candy board” meetings and occupying the role of head candy taster. You can apply at CandyFunhouse.ca . PINK SAUCE OBSESSION Pink Sauce has taken TikTok by storm. And we now know what’s in it. Creator Chef Pii says the brightly-coloured condiment, which sells for $20 a bottle, contains dragon fruit, sunflower seed oil, honey, chili and garlic. But some are saying Pink Sauce might be risky due to its lack of preservatives. VELVEETA MARTINI BLT-owned restaurants in the US are now offering the Velveeta Veltini, a $15 martini featuring Velveeta-infused vodka, olive brine and vermouth. The martini glass is then garnished with cheese and Velveeta shells. And if you can’t make it to one of the restaurants, you can make one yourself by ordering a martini kit at GoldBelly.com . – Hal has written columns for years.
