Out of cash, Longmont's Terralux shuts down and searches for buyer By Shay Castle Posted:   08/15/2017 11:36:08 AM MDT Updated:   08/15/2017 06:01:14 PM MDT Senior Electrical Engineer Anthony McDougle looks over the "burn-in rack" after making adjustments to LED lights in the research and development lab at Terralux in Longmont on Feb. 6, 2016. The company shut down earlier this month. (Matthew Jonas / Staff Photographer) A fast-growing maker of LED and smart lighting doesn't have enough cash to keep its own lights on. Longmont-based Terralux, now known as Sielo, ceased all operations on Aug. 3 and is now looking for a buyer to get things running again. Chief Financial Officer Martin Lundie said Tuesday that the company is now in talks with potential acquirers. An announcement could be forthcoming within days, he said. "We're in the process of entertaining offers for the company to be acquired, we are continuing to satisfy orders and shipping product," Lundie said. "We really would like to maintain the jobs in the area." As of December 2016, the company employed 57 people, according to the Longmont Economic Development Partnership. Lundie declined to comment on current workforce numbers. Lundie said the shutdown was necessary because "there wasn't money to continue." He declined to answer further questions, citing ongoing negotiations. Calls to President and CEO Steve Hane and Director of Business Development Matthew Sallee were not returned. Emails to the executives returned a message that the two no longer were with the company as of Aug. 3, and included instructions to contact Lundie. Founded in 2003, Terralux changed its name to Sielo in May. It relocated from Gunbarrel to Longmont in 2010, and last year took over additional space at 1830 Lefthand Circle to accommodate its growing retrofit business. Advertisement At the time, Hane said Terralux was experiencing 70 percent annual growth and projecting revenue of $20 million for 2016. Its retrofit business, which became the company's focus in 2012, was the major driver, having grown by 200 percent in the past three years, according to Hane. Several large institutions tapped Terralux for lighting upgrades, including the University of Colorado, Colorado State University and Broomfield's public library. The company also recently unveiled expanded offerings to its LEDSense technology platform that connects smart devices such as lightbulbs and thermostats. The company has raised heavily from investors to fund the growth. In 2017, Terralux conducted two raises for a combined $7.6 million, according to filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission. That was on top of an $11 million raise in 2015 and a $4.5 million round in 2014. A fund chaired by former Vice President Al Gore, Generation Investment Management, participated in the $11 million round, which Pennsylvania-based EnerTech Capital led. EnerTech declined comment; GIM did not respond by press time. Lundie declined to disclose how much the company had raised to date. SEC filings dating back to 2010 show Terralux has raised north of $50 million.
