(Yicai) Feb. 2 -- Teld New Energy, the largest charging pile operator in the world's biggest market of new energy vehicles, earned its first net profit last year after more than nine years of operation due to an expanding market. Teld’s public charging pile network was greatly enlarged, which boosted its revenue and gains, Qingdao-based Tgood Electric, parent of Teld, announced in its earnings forecast recently. Tgood, a maker of electrical distribution boxes, set up Teld in 2014 to start its electric vehicle charging business. Teld's total investment tallies CNY11 billion (USD1.5 billion), and almost a fifth of that was earmarked for research and development, according to the firm's website. Tgood holds almost 78 percent of Teld. Due to the high initial investment, it took a long time for Teld to become profitable. In 2022, the firm narrowed its net loss by 49 percent year-over-year to CNY26 million (USD3.6 million) while revenue surged by 47 percent to CNY4.6 billion (USD640.7 million), according to its earnings report. Teld was China's biggest operator of charging facilities as of Dec. 31, last year, as it maintained 523,000 public charging piles. More than half of them were direct current ones, resulting in faster charging, making up more than a quarter of the domestic total. The company provided car owners with about 9.3 billion kilowatt hours of electricity last year, up by 59 percent from the year before, it said. Even the parent expects to boost its profitability as the segments of electricity equipment and charging piles widened last year. Tgood's net profit should reach CNY408.3 million or even CNY517.2 million (USD57.5 million to USD72.8 million), expanding by 50 to 90 percent from 2022, the listed company added. China had more than 20.4 million NEVs as of Dec. 31, 2023, making up 6 percent of all cars, up from 4 percent logged a year before that, according to official data. Editor: Emmi Laine
