Thursday Mar 12, 2015 by Josh Boyle - Director of Community & Marketing, VentureFizz On Monday, a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign closed out after 977 backers shelled out their hard earned money – to the tune of $127,838 – for TarDisk , a secure, tool-free upgrade that doubles (or even triples) the onboard storage of your Macbook by adding up to 256GB of extra space. Founded by by Pierce Schiller, CEO, and Craig Leaf, CTO, TarDisk is the first 256GB flash memory expansion card to sit flush inside your MacBook. Essentially, the duo, who are currently working out of the Harvard iLab, wanted to redesign digital storage – and TarDisk is what they built! I caught up with Leaf to get more info on this innovative product that has Mac users anxiously awaiting their new storage space and asked how the idea came about. “Our MacBooks filled up and we needed more onboard storage. We quickly learned that there was no easy way to upgrade or worse that it was not possible. For many MacBook’s produced in the past 2 years proprietary Solid State Hard Drives (SSD) are simply not available. Pierce and I had worked on similar products in the past, but we wanted to make something exceptional. We wanted to make an impressive onboard solution that was flush, tool free and intuitive, which would offer better performance and more storage than anything else available. We also needed to make it simple. TarDisk is so simple to install, my 4 year old can install it and remove it, no tools or tech savvy are required.” What Problem is TarDisk Solving? An estimated 80% of people buy the entry or basic model MacBook. The Basic rMBP13 comes with 128GB, Air 13” 128GB. Most customers quickly run out of onboard storage. MacBook’s are made to be light and portable, so people don’t want to carry around extra bulk, external hard drives etc. Apple knows this and they want to sell you cloud storage, as well as, a new computer. The non-upgradable MacBook has become the standard for Apple laptops. What exactly is TarDisk and how does it solve this problem? TarDisk is a way to double or triple your MacBook’s storage capacity and for many newer MacBook models it’s the only 256GB onboard storage upgrade option. By utilizing your MacBook’s SDXC port, TarDisk can leverage the high-bandwidth PCIe bus connection to directly integrate with your system. TarDisk’s flash platform is designed around the latest innovations, using the fastest controllers, new extremely efficient connectors and NAND memory. Schiller and Leaf created a 256GB flash chip that is extremely fast while still small enough (at more than half the size of standard SD flash chip) to conform to Apple’s array of short SDXC ports. TarDisk allows any one to easily upgrade their non-upgradable MacBook. Current Availability After wrapping up a successful Kickstarter campaign TarDisk continues to offer the product via tardisk.com . Customers can place a pre order, ensuring the product arrives sooner than waiting for it to hit shelves and/or Amazon. Also, for a short period they are working on some pre-order perks, similar to those offered to Kickstarter backers. Tardisk’s first priority, I’m told, is getting products to the Kickstarter Backers, but should be available on Amazon in late April or early May 2015.
