Cardiff start-up Talent Ticker goes global with opening of New York office

Following a strong sales performance within America, VP of Sales, Max Mitcham has relocated to New York to coordinate the opening and expansion of Talent Ticker’s first international office. The company plan aggressive growth within the USA, with at least 12 hires expected within sales and marketing before the end of 2021. The office, located in the centre of New York’s financial district puts the growing team at the heart of the world of finance, just a few minutes’ walk from Wall Street and the Stock Exchange. Max Mitcham speaks about the expansion: “Talent Ticker has always been an exciting company, but we can now truly call ourselves a global startup. New York is a dream destination that many companies never make a reality, so to expand here so quickly is a testament to our incredible team and product.”
Alongside this achievement, Talent Ticker have been shortlisted in the Best Innovation category at the Global Recruiter Awards. This prestigious award highlights the impact of innovation during a tough time for recruiters. Newport-based international business events firm, Inspired Business Media, has acquired a grade II listed building in the centre of the city for its new HQ where it will create a further 50 jobs this year. The acquisition of the 19th Palace House, home to former archbishops, follows a £1m investment supported by Barclays. The expanding business was set up in 2013 by Jason Awatar and Leigh Hussain. It now employs 54 staff specialising in business to business conferences, round tables and events, as well as supporting educational learning and strategic meetings for clients including Google, Facebook, IBM and Amazon. Mr Hussain, director of Inspired Business Media said: “We are local boys who are passionate about our business and giving local talent the chance to grow and develop. We are going to create up to 50 new jobs this year and needed more space, which is when we decided to acquire the 200-year-old Palace House, home to former archbishops and derelict for a number of years. “This property is part of Newport’s forgotten history and we are delighted that the local council and surrounding residents have been supportive in this huge restoration project.”
Graham Turner, Barclays business manager, said: “Leigh and Jason are great examples of an entrepreneur using their experience, contacts and skills to develop a successful business. By really understanding the business and issues they have faced, Barclays has been able to support the business throughout its development. This is great news for Newport in restoring this historical building back to its former glory while creating jobs for the local community. ”

Welshpool-based Hafren Scientific Group have secured its third investment from the Development Bank of Wales since 2015 with a £200,000 loan to part-fund the acquisition of X-Ray Mineral Services. As experts in mineralogical and chemical analysis, X-Ray Mineral Services is particularly active in the Middle East with a client base that includes all the national oil companies in the region. Based in Colwyn Bay with clients also spanning the geotechnical, agriculture and recycling sectors, the team of 11 specialists regularly undertake third party outsourced work for Hafren. The acquisition will enable Hafren to create a ‘one-stop shop’ oil and gas technology centre and a base to develop innovative analytics for new mining, environmental and green markets . Tim Pearce, managing director of Hafren Scientific Group said: “This acquisition adds several important components to our multi-disciplinary geoscience offering as well as enabling the diversification of our non-oil and gas service delivery capability. “As a business, we believe that high-quality data is at the heart of robust geological solutions. “Our continued success in this exciting industry is based on our commitment to quality and we have no doubt that the integration of X-Ray Mineral Services’ analytical capability and highly skilled staff will further enhance our ability to continue to innovate cost-effective data delivery to our clients.”
Stewart Williams, portfolio executive with the Development Bank of Wales said: “We are very proud to have taken an active role in the growth of Hafren over the last four years. This latest funding is our third investment in the business and testament to our confidence in their growth ambition and vision. “With the support of our own non-executive director Doctor Carol Bell as Chair, the business is performing exceptionally well and we wish them every success with this acquisition that further strengthens North West Wales as a growth hub for the geological sector.”

Having launched its live platform in the summer, Talent Ticker has already secured an impressive enterprise client list of recruitment agencies across the UK, the United States and Germany. This seed funding will allow the start-up to further develop its machine learning technology and hire more research and development , as well as sales and customer facing staff. With 110,000 people employed in the £35.7bn UK recruitment industry, recruitment technology is set to become a major growth sector. Talent Ticker uses machine learning technology to scour recruitment news, insights and job postings to predict when companies will be hiring and releasing staff. This enables staffing professionals to get ahead of the market, save time, and increase the quality of their operations. Aled Jones, Talent Ticker’s head of technology: “Since launching Talent Ticker, we are beginning to see recruiters look closely at how they can use technology to improve their working life. "We are not trying to use AI to replace recruiters, but we are focused on creating easy to use tools that enable recruiters to build better relationships, cut out inefficiencies and ultimately make more money.”
The firm's chief executive Nick Vaughan, said:  “This is a fantastic opportunity to continue on the early successes we have had and to now double down our efforts in being able to predict staffing trends. "Our goal is being the Bloomberg for recruitment, and this investment will allow us to expand our 22-person team in Central Cardiff, enabling us to improve our AI and move into new markets and geographies.”
 
Wolfestone Group has acquired the London-based language training company City Lingual
The international language service provider, which has its headquarters in Swansea, has announced the take over of the well-established, London-based language training company. The news follows the opening of offices in Bucharest and London. This acquisition means Wolfestone Group expands its portfolio to include four companies; Wolfestone Translation, VoiceBox, RLI and City Lingual. City Lingual, formerly known as The Language Crew, has operated as a boutique supplier of business language training for more than 10 years. Anna Bastek, the founder of Wolfestone Group, said: “Acquiring City Lingual is a great step forward for the group. It’s a testimony to our vision that if you put the customer first and keep investing in the business, there are no limits to growth. “We have very ambitious plans for the future. The language and multimedia industries continue to grow, and new opportunities are always arising. We will soon be deploying new AI technology which is set to save on time and costs for our clients. We are on target for £7.5m turnover this year and we are not stopping there.”

Newport-based early years education technology specialists Kinderly has secured a £300,000 investment to support its expansion plans. Kinderly  founder and chief executive Geraint Barton has secured £150,000 from Ufi Ventures, follow-on equity investment of £100,000 from the Development Bank of Wales and £50,000 from angel investors. The first investment by the Development Bank was an initial seed investment of £150,000 in 2018. The funding will be used to further develop the Kinderly range of digital resources for early years childcare professionals. The firm's software tool, Kinderly Together makes it quick and easy to digitally capture the early years learning journey. It allows childcare providers to enhance parent communication. It also provides reporting and tools to better manage childcare provision by viewing developmental progress of all children at a glance with progress tracking, effective planning and reporting via a personalised dashboard. Kinderly Learn is a new online learning platform that helps early years practitioners to manage their own continued professional development (CPD). Mr Barton said: “What motivates us is improving outcomes for all children, no matter what their background, so our mission is to create digital resources and tools to support childcare professionals to be at their best  and to help them run an outstanding early years setting. “We are delighted to have received support from the Development Bank of Wales and Ufi Ventures whose mission to impact outcomes through the use of technology, closely aligns with ours. “Our digital platforms enable childcare professionals to be at their best for children by helping them keep up to date with their learning and CPD. "The platforms will improve efficiency and  enhance two-way communication with parents by joining up the child’s early learning journey between the childcare setting and home. Evidence-based research tells us that parental engagement is a key factor for improved outcomes for children. “The investment by Ufi Ventures and the Development Bank of Wales will enable the further development of our unique technology to help ensure that all children are given a great start in life.”
The firm's chairman Garry Pratt, said: ‘Kinderly has a fantastic commercial opportunity in the rapidly growing and changing childcare market, both in the UK and internationally. "The approach of Geraint and his team to focus on helping childcare providers be at their best resonates strongly with the core stakeholder, the parent, and has real impact on their children’s early years development. The funding and support from the Development Bank of Wales and Ufi Ventures will be instrumental in helping start to scale the business’.”

Leaders Romans Group (LRG) has acquired Cardiff–based residential sales and letting agency Moginie James. The business was founded by Nick James in 2001 with then-business partner, Peter Moginie. It has three branches in Cardiff, as well as short lets Airbnb-style company, Hello Ted, which was set up last year. The Hello Ted business, named after Mr James’ dog, is run by two members of the senior management team of Moginie James, who will remain as employees for both businesses. The existing premises in Cyncoed, Roath and Pontcanna will remain under the Moginie James brand with 44 staff,
Mr James will continue to work with LRG on a consultancy basis post-completion. The value of the deal has not bee disclosed. Matthew Light, group acquisitions director at LRG, said: “Moginie James represents an excellent opportunity to enter the Cardiff market, extending the geographic footprint of the LRG network into South Wales. Cardiff provides a significant property base which more than justifies the three-branch location that the current business trades from. “Additionally, the Hello Ted business represents a significant opportunity to grow a short lets business, not just in Cardiff, but also across some of the other cities in which LRG already has a presence. We are delighted to welcome such a strong business into the LRG fold, and even more so to be welcoming all of Moginie James’ existing employees into the group. “We are confident that business will continue as normal for our acquired clients, who will continue to benefit from the excellent customer service that they have come to know and expect of the Moginie James teams.”

A four-star hotel in North Wales has secured a £500,000 finance facility from HSBC UK to undergo an extensive refurbishment project, following the acquisition of an adjacent building earlier in the year. The Dunoon Hotel in Llandudno (established in 2002) has used the six-figure funding to completely restore and fit-out the 12,000 sq ft derelict building next door. The refurbishment is creating an additional 18 rooms to meet rising demand for the high-end hotel experience, whilst preserving the part of the hotel that locals already know and love. The works started in early 2019 and are expected to be completed this month. The new refurbishment will create a further five jobs, adding to the Victorian seaside town’s rich tourism economy. Rhys Williams, managing director of the Dunoon Hotel, said: “I’m very pleased and proud to be on the home straight after spending the last year reviving the derelict property next door to The Dunoon, which means we no longer need to turn people away due to a lack of space. The funding from HSBC UK has been instrumental in helping us provide a new, high-end offer to people who love travelling, as well as helping us realise our ambitions of growing our family-run business. We’re really excited to officially open the building this month." Martin Lyons, HSBC UK’s business banking area director for North Wales, said: “We’re delighted to support the expansion of this very popular hotel. The Dunoon is unique in the Victorian seaside town of Llandudno, so we look forward to seeing an influx of new visitors to the newly renovated hotel.”
