Tweet COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. ST Microelectronics has acquired Synad Technologies Ltd., the British developer of dual-band transceiver chips for wireless LANs. In September 2001, Synad (Reading, England) claimed to be the only company sampling a single-chip transceiver that supported both 802.11a and 802.11b, as well as integrating the RF switching for automatic handoff between the two standards. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, though ST pledged to keep Synads team of more than 50 engineers, as well as the bulk of marketing and support staff, in the Reading area. The company was founded in early 2000 by a team under chief executive Mike Baker, with funding from Celtic House Venture Partners. ST plans to immediately offer a full dual-mode WLAN product for network interface cards and access points, and to bundle Synads branded chip-set products with STs own broadband access products, for systems such as residential gateways and home routers.
