Baker Engineering Logo
Baker Engineering

Baker Engineering is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Modeling & Simulation for Optimization of Heavy-Fuel Micro Rotary Engines. The abstract given for this project is as follows: Under this Phase I SBIR, Baker Engineering will conduct research through modeling and simulation for optimization of heavy fuel micro rotary engines. Research will be conducted using the UAV Engines Ltd. (UEL) model 74-1380 as the basis. Such a rotary would be the ideal engine for military engine applications that require high power density and the capability of running on heavy fuels at low specific fuel consumption levels. Utilizing the current state of injection technology and simulation software, accurate performance models can be established. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis and zero dimensional modeling will be utilized to refine advanced fuel delivery methods, rotor geometry, and evaluate induction configurations. A fuel injection system will be designed, and turbomachinery added. The result is a plan for successful operation of a micro Rotary Engine on heavy fuel with SFC of .35 lb/hp-hr. Baker Engineering is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Development of small fuel efficient multi-fuel capability engine. The abstract given for this project is as follows: The Baker Opposed Piston Single Cylinder Engine is a 24, 30 Hp engine with high power density (0.803 Hp/lb or 45.7 Hp/cu.ft.) capable of running on multiple fuels. The engine concept offers a totally new look at small engine development while utilizing several conventional engine components. In addition to high power density, the engine has significant advantages over current small engine programs, in both military and commercial applications. Previous development contracts have proven that the engine concept is viable and exciting. Now research is required to adapt the engine to the current military requirement for smaller applications and to advance the technology to a point where it will become a viable alternative. Specific primary areas of development that will be addressed in Phase I include: mechanical engine design, engine simulation/modeling, fuel research and component bench testing. Looking toward a Phase II SBIR, the objective will be to build and test a prototype of the 30 Hp engine.
