January saw the cost of groceries soar by a whopping 11.4 per cent as restaurant prices rose by 8.2 per cent. Meanwhile, temporary price-freezes at Loblaw and Metro have come to an end . Loblaw Companies, the parent company of Loblaws grocery stores and Shoppers Drug Mart, just reported fourth-quarter earnings of $529 million , with revenue up nearly 10 per cent from a year ago. If you’re looking for some alternatives to major grocers, here’s a list of some smaller ones to support: C&C Supermarket The large Asian supermarket also features hot prepared food as well as beauty and personal care supplies. The store is open daily from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. BestCo Foods BestCo Foods is an “all-in-one” shopping experience for people to explore “popular specialized Asian foods,” according to its website . With two locations, one in Scarborough and one in Etobicoke, customers can peruse their weekly flyer to explore deals. Bulk Barn You probably have heard of Bulk Barn, but did you know that you can get 15 per cent off your purchase on Sundays when you bring your own reusable containers? The company’s “Sustainable Sundays” program ties into its campaign that launched in 2016 urging customers to bring in their own reusable containers or bags. On Wednesdays, seniors and students can get 15 per cent off their purchases if they present identification. No registration is required to obtain these discounts. It includes a weekly special flyer where consumers can look for deals on their groceries. Sun Food Supermarket With the slogan “Better for Less” Sun Food Supermarket includes weekly flyers with deals on everything from fruit to fish. Sun Food Supermarket has two locations one in Markham and one in downtown Toronto and includes a bakery where customers can order baked goods ahead. Lady York This family-owned and operated grocery store in North York is located at 2939 Dufferin St. According to its website, it has a wide variety of specialty foods. Produce, deli and meats are “expertly selected and delivered daily.” Cataldi Fresh Market This large, family-owned European market has two locations: one in North Toronto at 2265 Keele St., and one in Woodbridge at 140 Woodbridge Ave. Cataldi says the specialty grocery store has been family-owned since 1979. Bare Market Go green with a trip to Bare Market , where shoppers can find plastic-free shopping, package-free groceries, and locally-grown and sourced produce. The store also sells body and home care products in bulk. The store is located near Coxwell subway station at 1480 Danforth Ave., and offers free local delivery for orders over $125. Masellis Supermarket According to its website, Masellis offers domestic and imported goods for affordable prices. The Italian grocer takes pride in the regional differentiation across its products.
