The most popular e-commerce platforms in the Netherlands

May 28, 2022

May 27, 2022 For a long time, WooCommerce led the list as the largest e-commerce platform. But with the webshop still on the rise in the Netherlands* – in the first quarter of 2022 alone more than 2255 new webshops were added to a total of more than 80 thousand – there is still room in the market. Shopify, in particular, is benefiting from the growth and is on its way to glory, with the largest market share of all ecommerce platforms worldwide. But what about the Netherlands and what are the other providers doing? In this article the results of a study into the most popular platforms of the moment. An e-commerce platform is a software application that helps you build an online store. The software makes it possible to easily manage your online sales activities. Now there are a lot of different e-commerce platforms on the market. Well-known platforms are WooCommerce, Shopify and Magento. But developments are going fast and the market share of the platforms has fluctuated over the years. We have researched which e-commerce platforms are the most popular at the moment. We have collected data for this, presented it in a diagram or table and compared it with previous years. For this research 3 different data sources were analysed: BuiltWith, Statista and Google Trends. Mainly the data from BuiltWith is used to map the market share. BuiltWith is a website profiler, lead generation, competitive analysis and business intelligence tool. To check the data, we used Statista and Google Trends. All three provide approximately the same data and trends that provide insight into the current state of affairs. The percentages in this study have been rounded to whole numbers. What are the most popular e-commerce platforms in the Netherlands? More than 214,000 websites have been analysed, of which 46,244 have installed WooCommerce. Of all ecommerce websites found by BuiltWith’s software, 22% use WooCommerce. Shopify is in second place with a total of 33,633 detected websites. This is equivalent to a market share of 16%. We can conclude from this data analysis that WooCommerce is the most used e-commerce platform in the Netherlands. A lesser-known e-commerce platform is Ecwid, which has a market share of 12% in third place. The figures below were last updated on May 15, 2022. In addition to the data from BuiltWith, data from Statista was also used. Although the data from Statista differs by a few percent compared to BuiltWith, the results are similar. This also shows that WooCommerce, Shopify and Ecwid are the largest platforms. The top 10 most popular e-commerce platforms in the Netherlands according to BuiltWith and Statista can be found in the table below. E-commerce platform The popularity of e-commerce platforms compared 2020 To investigate a trend, we compared the most recent data from 2022 with the data from 2 years ago. In this way we can map out any shifts within the market. Both pie charts are based on data from BuiltWith. There is a shift in WooCommerce and Shopify. WooCommerce has clearly lost ground in the past 2 years. Since 2020, however, Shopify has captured a larger market share. This e-commerce platform has almost doubled in the Netherlands. At Magento we see a clear decrease from 12% to 5%. The e-commerce platform OpenCart is still in the top 10, but has had to make way for MyOnlineStore and Mijnwebwinkel. The table below lists the most popular e-commerce platforms of 2020 and the increase or decrease in their market share. E-commerce platform What are the most popular platforms worldwide? The most notable results are the significant growth of Shopify and the decline of WooCommerce and Magento. However, how does this compare to the rest of the world? We can also conclude that the popularity of WooCommerce and Magento is declining slightly worldwide. However, the number of websites using Shopify continues to grow rapidly. The graphs below show this based on the most recent data from BuiltWith. The top 1 million websites around the world have been analyzed. WooCommerce To confirm the above data from BuiltWith, we use Google Trends. This tool from Google gives you insight into the popularity of a keyword trend in a country. Below you can see the keyword popularity in the Netherlands of WooCommerce, Shopify and Magento. This data also shows a decrease/increase in the aforementioned e-commerce platforms. It’s interesting to see how Shopify has grown tremendously in such a short time. It is a Canadian multinational e-commerce company which is already the largest in Canada with a market share of 33%. Also in the United States, Shopify is already the largest with a market share of 28%. This seems to be spreading to Europe, including the Netherlands. As you can see in the pie chart, WooCommerce and Shopify are still pretty much the same. But the rise of Shopify – already the most popular platform worldwide – is undeniable and the graphs above indeed indicate that that growth is not stopping just yet.
