Three VICIS Helmets Rank Among NFL’s Best; QB-Coach Communications Poised for a Tech Upgrade

Apr 22, 2021

April 22, 2021 The NFL and NFLPA released their seventh annual helmet safety test results, with models from VICIS securing the top three spots. Zero2 models from VICIS—the Matrix, Trench, and standard helmet—ranked first, second, and third. The second-ranked Trench helmet, designed for linemen, is the first position-specific helmet to be approved for in-game use by the NFL. The Trench comes with added impact-absorption bumpers on its front and upper sides, areas where offensive and defensive linemen commonly sustain hits. “All 32 teams within the NFL have committed to purchasing Zero2 helmets for next season. I would say a vast majority of them will bring in Trench models to give linemen the opportunity try them during minicamp and beyond,” VICIS VP of product development Jason Neubauer tells SportTechie. The NFL is encouraging manufactures to now design a helmet specifically for quarterbacks. However, that testing process won’t start until the league solidifies the next phase of its coach-to-player radio communications system. “To my understanding, the coach-to-player system will either become quite small or removed from the helmet altogether. It will be maybe in the shoulder pads and [quarterbacks] will have maybe something in their ears,” Neubauer says. The success of Zero2 is symbolic of a comeback for VICIS, which nearly closed operations in 2019 and changed owners amid financial troubles. “For us, it has been very rewarding to finish that mission not only with a group of people that started it, but also for a larger group of people that had a hand in getting us to where we are that are no longer here, unfortunately,” Neubauer says. The Seattle-based startup believes it’s currently feasible to make helmets affixed with screens that would display play calling to quarterbacks, but whether the NFL is ready to embrace that from a competition standpoint is another story. “What we’ve seen in just the last couple of years is more and more of the eye shields being worn by NFL players. A heads-up display on the corner of a shield, technology wise, is totally reasonable to imagine. Living in Seattle, it would remove some of the factor of the loud noise in the stands,” Neubauer says.
