For the past couple of years, the market for true wireless earbuds has been focusing on ANC (active noise-cancelation) thanks to the latest hybrid technology which has made the latest generation of ANC true wireless earbuds much more effective at blocking out unwanted sounds. So now that the ANC issue has been cracked, where is the earbud market headed next? Recently, I’ve noticed a trend with some earbud manufacturers to turn to Sonarworks SoundID, a software algorithm that can customize earbuds and headphones to suit an individual’s hearing. It’s a bespoke solution that can create a pair of earbuds that will fit a person’s hearing like the proverbial glove. I’ve already seen earbuds from Grell and Klipsch turn to  Sonarworks  its  SoundID  technology and now it’s made an appearance on a more affordable pair of earbuds in the form of the new 1More ColorBuds 2. The new ColorBuds 2 not only offer a personalized sound but they also include ANC based on 1More’s proprietary  QuietMax Technology  to cut as much unwanted sound as possible. Using 1MORE’s ANC technology with a graphene-coated diaphragm on the earbuds’ drivers, the company claims these earbuds can eliminate some of the sonic chaos created when using ANC circuitry. Additionally, the ColorBuds 2 have a “pass-through” mode so that the user can hear more of what is going on around them. I think the ANC function could be stronger and there appears to be no way to turn the ANC off. Support for Qualcomm’s latest aptX Adaptive Audio Codec is built in to the ColorBuds 2. This codec automatically adjusts its bitrate to deliver better sound quality or lower latency, depending on what the earbuds are used for. If you want to reduce the latency of the audio when watching an action movie or playing a game, the codec can adapt to a lower bitrate with less latency enabling the sound and vision stay in sync. Physically, the ColorBuds 2 have a stylish teardrop shape that fits well in the ear, despite the small size and asymmetrical design. Built around the latest Bluetooth 5.2 and a Qualcomm QCC3040 chipset, the ColorBuds 2 have a stable wireless connection as well as other Qualcomm goodies like cVc 8.0 noise-cancellation technology for clearer phone calls. Each earpiece features two microphones  for clearer speech, whether that’s for phone calls or a meeting over Zoom. Qualcomm’s TrueWireless Mirroring Technology also adds extra functionality with a seamless swap between both the left and right earbuds. When it comes to battery performance, the ColorBuds 2 offer a total playing time of 24 hours using the power stored in the earbud charging case. On their own, the earbuds can play for up to eight hours on a single charge, which is impressive given their size. The storage case can be recharged using USB-C or via a Qi wireless charging mat. The earbuds are rated at IPX5 for water-resistance, so they will be fine for shrugging off a bit of drizzle, the odd splash from the swimming pool or even sweat in the gym. Touch controls on each earbud provide control for the music, phone calls and access to a voice assistant. The controls can be reconfigured using the 1More app. Finally, there’s an in-ear detection function that automatically pauses the audio as soon as the earbud is taken out of the ear. The ColorBuds 2 are loaded with the latest technology and features, including the Sonarworks SoundID customization. Even the app offers a library of soothing noises like rain or a gentle waterfall to help you get to sleep. That said, I ran into a few problems when it came to personalising the sound. I ran the SoundID algorithm via the smartphone app and, despite having the correct size of silicone ear tips for my ears, I felt the sound was a little thin. There’s no doubt that these earbuds are analytical when it comes to the higher frequencies, but notede a distinct lack of bass for my tastes… and I do enjoy a bit of bass. This slight disappointment could be because the SoundID function and my hearing just didn’t gel. Sound is such a subjective matter and I know what I like. However, putting the tonal quality of these earbuds to one side for a moment, I think it’s fair to say that they offer so many great features and they are backed up with some of the best Bluetooth technology that Qualcomm has to offer. Verdict: If I could achieve a better personal sound profile out of these earbuds, I think I’d be very impressed with what’s on offer here. As it is, I found I preferred the  SmartPEATS Mini Pro  earbuds that I reviewed at the same time as ColorBuds 2. However, your experience may be completely different to mine so I wouldn’t want to write these earbuds off because of my experience with the SoundID algorithm.
