Facebook said to have bought Sonics

Mar 14, 2019

Facebook is said to have acquired the 22 year-old Silicon Valley SoC IP company Sonics as part of its efforts to build a chip design team. Last year Facebook’s chief AI scientist Yann LeCun said that Facebook needed ICs which could analyse live video and take it down while it was still streaming if it was offensive. Using existing technology to do that would require, said LeCun: “A huge amount of compute power,” requiring large amounts of energy. Sonics specialises in energy efficient IP for power management and on-chip networking functions . Facebook is under political pressure to take down offensive content. It came under more pressure when it was revealed it was paying very low salaries, in very poor working conditions, to those who do the monitoring of content. Neither Facebook or Sonics is confirming or denying the deal. Recommended Articles
