In Science this week: evolution of flightless birds, and more. Papers of Note Juan, Teng, et al., Nucleic Acids Research A team from China's Harbin Institute of Technology introduces the Personal Genome Browser, or PGB, in Nucleic Acids Research. The web-based genome browser is built on a genetic-molecular-phenotypic model, the researchers say, and aims to functionally annotate and visualize individual genomes — from SNPs and small insertions and deletions to related phenotypic associations with disease risk, drug response, or physical features. As personal genomes continue to get cranked out, "the PGB can be widely used to display, interpret, and analyze personal genomes," they write, noting that the resource is expected to "greatly benefit academic researchers and clinical physicians. " Stick insect genomes reveal natural selection’s role in parallel speciation Soria-Carrasco, Gompert, et al., Science A University of Sheffield-led team report data from a genome analysis of stick insects showing how certain aspects of evolution are predictable and repeatable. The researchers sequenced the genomes of two ecotypes of the stick insect Timema cristinae, each of which have adapted to a different host plant, and compared them to see how their environments shaped their genetic makeup. They found thousands of diverging genomic regions among the stick insects' ecotypes, but found that most of these genomic changes were influenced by geographic location rather than host plant. The investigators then switched each type of insect to the other's host plant and discovered that the ecotypes' genomes exhibited both converging and diverging regions after just one generation on a different host. Altogether, the findings suggest that natural selection can drive a parallel evolution among ecotypes of a species and that replicate species could evolve separately under similar environmental pressures. People on the Move Foundation Medicine has appointed Urmi Prasad Richardson to vice president of its international business. Richardson will be based in Germany. Previously, she held leadership positions at Chiron, Novartis, and Immucor. Scott Mendel has been named CFO at GenMark Diagnostics. Mendel joins GenMark from Active Network, where he held the same position for four years. Prior to Active Network, he worked at GE for more than 20 years, most recently serving as CFO of the company's Healthcare IT division. Sequenom Chief Medical Officer Allan Bombard plans to retire in June, the company said in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission this week. Bombard has served as the firm's CMO since early 2009, and as one of its CLIA/CAP lab directors since 2010. Keygene's board of directors has appointed Fayaz Khazi as its new CEO, effective May 5. Khazi recently was VP of business analytics and strategy at Intrexon, where he worked since 2007 in various leadership positions focused on the food and agricultural sectors.
