SipNShut reclosable can set for 2019 launch

Nov 2, 2018

SNSTech said the SipNShut fits into existing canning lines, allowing the technology to be used on a large scale A new beverage can is to launch next year that claims to solve the problem of reclosable packaging for the format. Austin-based SNSTech has created the 'SipNShut' can, which the company claims allows for on-the-go cans in the same manner as a plastic bottle. The design fits into existing canning lines, meaning the technology can be ramped up for large-scale production runs. "Consumers want reclosable cans but the options on the market today are not attractive to fillers, brands or consumers," said SNSTech president Bill Brandell. "They mix plastic and metal, don't work well on existing canning lines and are awkward for consumers to open. We focused on fixing all of those issues with SipNShut." The can, which SNSTech claims can also help cut waste, will be unveiled at the BevNet Winter show in California later this year and is expected to hit shelves with selected brand partners in Q3 2019. Describing how the SipNShut works, a spokesperson for SNSTech told just-drinks: "The consumer opens the can by pushing the lever to the left. This breaks the seal of the can. Then, the finger lever is moved back to its original position on the right. When that finger lever is pushed back, it catches the metal shutter that seals the opening and pulls it along with the finger lever. Likewise, the lever can be moved back to the left to close the can." SipNShut has a tamper-evident indicator so once it is opened and reclosed, it displays an obvious indicator. A number of companies are looking at new packaging options as part of their sustainability campaigns. In September, Carlsberg unveiled a way to package multi-pack can formats without the use of plastic , a proposition it said could reduce global plastic waste by around 1,200 tonnes per year.
