0 13 February 2015 Tweet   It has been reported that in May last year Ilia Perekopsky, former Vice President of Russian social network VKontakte , invested in image verification startup SMTDP Tech . The company’s technology allows users to check whether a photograph or video has undergone digital manipulation. As well as photographs, the technology can also be used to determine the authenticity of digital copies of documents, identifying the changes that have been made and the programme used. This technology is very versatile, with potential applications in media, advertising and the security forces. Last year SMTDP experts were called in to verify photographs of Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17 for a documentary shown on Russian television. It has applications in the insurance industry, where it can be used to check the authenticity of images of damage to property. Ilia Perekopsky: “I have known the young and talented team from St Petersburg running this project for a long time. Their technology is unique, there’s nothing else like it out there, and could very easily be scaled globally.” SMTDP Tech’s other investors include the Foundation for Internet Development Initiatives (FRII) and Flint Capital , whose cofounder, Oleg Seydak , said that the project received a total of $1 million in investment from its latest deal. According to news agency Izvestia, the company’s investors own a combined 37.5% stake, with the rest belonging to its founders. The startup was founded in Russia in 2011, by experts in business automation and graphic design, and was the first project to receive joint investment from FRII and Flint Capital. The company is currently undergoing a process of ‘deoffshorization’ at the request of FRII, with the rights to its primary software, Picture Manipulation Inspector, being transferred from Cypriot company SMTDP Tech Ltd to Russian company SMTDP Technology.
