Cambodia’s Smart Axiata piloted ‘Internet of Things Challenge’ to boost digital innovations

Oct 12, 2020

Alumni from SmartStart, SmartEdu and SmartSpark programs met in Phnom Penh over the weekend piloting the Smart IoT Challenge to tackle unique digital challenges and to demonstrate their understanding of one of the key digital concepts of the 21st century. IoT refers to the use of digital technology to connect computing devices embedded in everyday objects, enabling them to send and receive data. IoT technology is being increasingly used in agriculture, manufacturing and in designing smart homes and smart cities, where machines are able to communicate with each other and the data gathered then used to maximize efficiency and value. A simple example of this would be lights in an office building that detect, through sensors, whether anyone is in the room and then automatically turn on or off accordingly. In collaboration with Impact Hub Phnom Penh and Arrowdot, the Smart IoT Challenge aimed to equip alumni with fundamental IoT knowledge, and they were tasked with identifying a real-world problem and then outlining how IoT technology could deliver a solution. The winning team, Smart Composting, took on the problem of excessive food waste and proposed a solution using humidity, temperature and other sensors to remove the guesswork out of composting and make it a much simpler process for those unfamiliar with the practice. Chea Chansoksambath from the winning team said: “As a SmartEdu Scholar, it is such a great experience for me and my team having joined the Smart IoT challenge. This opportunity not only enables me to gain a better understanding of new digital and IoT skills but also to put them into practical use with real solutions that I hadn’t thought of before. I also gained important skills such as teamwork, pitching and working under pressure.” “As the world digitizes more rapidly, identifying real-world problems that can be solved using digital technology is a critical next step in harnessing the power of the Internet. As we move quickly towards 5G, with its increased speeds and efficiency, the real potential of the Internet of Things can be harnessed to make our workplaces, our farms, our schools and our cities more efficient and connected,” said Smart Axiata CEO Thomas Hundt. The piloted Smart IoT Challenge will be embedded in the annual SmartStart Young Innovator Program to expose participants to different technologies and help shape their businesses through trendy digital technologies. As Cambodia’s digital champion, Smart is constantly looking for innovative ways to engage with young Cambodians through its various pioneering digital education programs including SmartStart and SmartEdu.

Princeton Power Systems Logo
Princeton Power Systems

Princeton Power Systems offers an array of products and services available for high-performance power electronics. The company's advance converters are used for military and commercial distributed generation applications, including solar systems, energy storage, critical load control, backup power, and other advance features. PPS' talented and dedicated staff is ready to assist and tackle any difficulties our customers may face. Princeton Power Systems (PPS) is developing a inverter that regulates DC power from PV strings to 13.8kV AC without a grid side transformer. The inverter includes control algorithms to provide consistent power flow from the solar installation as well as grid support functions and advanced communications.

Ice Energy Logo
Ice Energy

Ice Energy is engaged in energy efficiency and distributed energy storage, Ice Energy aims to develop, manufactures and markets transformational new residential and commercial air conditioning, utility and green building products. The company's HVAC units slash peak electricity consumption while providing cooling comfort. A provider of smart grid and distributed energy storage solutions for leveling peak energy demand, Ice Energy's utility solutions fundamentally transform energy system efficiency and reliability. The company also represents a critical renewable portfolio resource to complement intermittent, off-peak renewable portfolio assets such as wind and solar. The Ice Energy product aims to enable utilities to shift load to off peak hours when the energy delivery system is both underutilized and more thermally efficient.

V-Fuel's Vanadium Bromide Redox Flow battery is a grid-scale energy storage system which represents a development over other redox flow batteries. Improved materials, solutions and membrane design aim to deliver twice the energy density allowing energy from wind and solar power sources to be stored and released into the transmission grid when needed.

The SRT Group

The SRT Group, Inc. (SRT) is a technology oriented firm focused on developing and licensing energy technologies. SRT has developed and patented advanced halogen-based processes for: nn‚· electrical energy storage,nn‚· renewable hydrogen production,nn‚· biowaste (carbonaceous waste) treatment,nn‚· multi-emission (SOx, NOx, Hg, HAPs) control,nn‚· solar energy conversion to heat & electricity,nn‚· liquid fuel production from hydrogen,nn‚· sour-gas (H2S) sweetening, andnn‚· greenhouse gas reduction. nnThe enforcement of the Clean Air & Water Acts, renewable portfolio standards, growth in peak electric demand, and the rise in oil & natural gas prices create an immediate opportunity for SRT's patented processes. The company's near-term goal is to develop the biowaste to biofuel technology with energy storage, followed by the clean-coal & sour-gas technologies, and eventually SRT's solar processes. The solar technology will integrate all the SRT processes into a benign total energy system suitable for most of the planet.

SkyBuilt Power

SkyBuilt Power is engaged in self-contained, rapidly deployable, renewable and hybrid energy power systems. SkyBuilt's rugged, transportable power stations combine solar arrays, wind turbines, battery banks, and optional backup generators. From cell tower power to forward operating bases, the company's systems are designed to be shipped to their location, set up in minutes to hours, and operate for years with little or no maintenance, fuel, or logistics.

DC Wafers

Demand for electricity in the company's society is growing considerably and there are no signs of this changing both in developed and developing countries and communities. This is becoming one of society's main problems today because demand is increasing faster than supply and electricity is only generated in certain places on the planet. Traditional ways (non-renewable) of energy generation do not only have geopolitical problems associated with them but also serious implications for the environment. The situation is not sustainable if the company want to prevent future generations from suffering as a result of the company's abuse of the world. The true alternative solution for the current energy problem is renewable energy employing resources with a rate of renewal in nature exceeding their rate of consumption, they are environmentally friendly and are available all over the planet. Out of each type of renewable energy, solar energy is the most available; In just one hour, the sun creates the same amount of energy consumed by all of human kind in a year; and, of course, the sun comes out for everyone.
