Formerly known as Nomadic Systems, SmartDelta is developing software, or "linkware," for laptop computers that will provide connectivity over telephone lines, cellular connections, and radio links. Initial focus is synchronizing communications between portable and desktop devices. The software, called SmartSync, is an intelligent file transfer program that provides fast and safe data distribution for single users and workgroups sharing information across multiple computers. Locally wired and cordless users can locate, update, and transfer files peer-to-peer across Novell networks and can synchronize drive-to-drive both remotely and automatically. Users on the road or working from home can update their office computer or multiple workgroup PCs using dial-up access. SmartSync uses a two-step method for optimizing data transfer. First, it locates the files that have changed since the last update, and then transfers only the information that has actually changed in the files, not the entire file. Other file transfer programs mechanically send entire files, wasting time and communications bandwidth.
